Description

Dec. 6, 1938.
H. WESTERMAN 2,139,532
MANS GARMENT Originalv Filed June 3. 1935 Patented Dec. 6, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application June s, 1935, serial-N0. 24,682 Renewed May 7, 1938 3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in mens garments and particularly to undergarments for men.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide from the cloth of the garment by simple folds an integral suspensory pocket which will be comfortable in use, which will be embodied in the garment without materially increasing the cost thereof, and which will not be aifected by laundering of the garment.
Still another object of my invention is to provide an integral suspensory of the type specified in garments made of conventional inelastic cloth or sheet material.
Still another object of my invention is to provide an integral suspensory in mens shorts.
With these and other objects in View, the invention comprises the combination of members and arrangement of parts so combined as to coact and cooperate with each other in the performance of the functions and the accomplishment of the results herein contemplated, and comprises in one of its adaptations, the species or preferred form illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of a pair of mens shorts embodying a suspensory pocket of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 4 is a view in elevation from the inside of the leg portion of the garment;
Fig. 5 is a view in front elevation of a modiiied form of suspensory pocket embodying my invention in a pair of shorts;
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. '7 is a section on the line '1 -'l of Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawing, I indicates a pair of mens shorts which is in all respects of conventional construction, except that one of the legs is folded or modified as hereinafter specified.
In accordance with my invention, a portion 2 of one of the legs of the garment adjacent to the crotch thereof,- and preferably, as shown, a portion of the bottom rim of the left leg,-is gathered to provide above said rim a pair of outside pleats with the inner-edgeportions thereof extending toward each other to produce a suspensory pocket, preferably substantially triangular in conformation as shown with the apex of (o1. 12s- 159)V the triangle extending downwardly and toward the leg opening of the leg having the gathered portion.
In the preferred form of my invention shown, the portion 2 is provided with pleats 2', 2a of substantially triangular conformation, having the base portions extending toward each other and into abutment at their lower edges, the apices of the pleats extending upwardly and outwardly from each other to form the downwardlydisposed triangular entrance portion of a pocket 3 formed by and between saidpleats. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 4, one edge and the bottom portions of the pleats 2', 2EL are closed by lines of stitching 3a and 3b to provide a closed suspensory pocket and two pleats join each other or come together at the hem or edge of the opening of the leg 2, which at this place is provided with a reinforcing strip Ib. The inside of said pocket and the edge portions surrounding the pocket are preferably lined with a lining 4 of softer material, such as lisle or silk, and this lining likewise reinforces the pocket and assists in making the same comfortable to the wearer.
It will be apparent that when a pair of shorts of this type is drawn on by the wearer a perfect fit of the suspensory pocket will be procured and the comfort of the wearer will be greatly increased, even in cases where a suspensory bandage is not necessary.
In Figs. 5 to 7, I have shown a modified form of suspensory pocket which is disposed at a lesser angle to the horizontal and is formed with pleats 5, 5' having open ends 5a, 5b adapted to provide ventilation during use. By providing the lower pleat 5a at an almost horizontal position, this pleat conforms with the normal lower edge of the leg opening and I am, as shown in Fig. 7, enabled to eliminate one of the folds shown in Fig. 3 because a normal fold of the rim portion of the leg is utilized as one of the pleats. In other respects the construction is similar to that shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive.
It will be seen from the above that I have provided from the cloth of the garment by simple folds or flat pleats an integral suspensory pocket which will fit the wearer snugly and properly, which will be comfortable in use, which may be embodied in the garment without materially increasing the cost thereof and which will not be affected by laundering of the garment, also that I have provided in mens shorts made of conventional material, such as inelastic cloth or sheet material, an integral suspensory of the type specified composed of flat pleats.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A mans garment comprising a body portion and leg portions separated by a crotch, one of the leg portions at the upper end thereof and adjacent to but below the crotch at a segmental portion of said leg near the front thereof being provided with a pair of outwardly-extending and oppositely-disposed pleats having substantially the conformation of right triangles with their hypotenuses inclining in opposite directions to provide therebetween an angular opening converging toward the bottom of the garment leg and cornmunicating with the interior of said garment leg to produce a suspensory pocket.
2. A mans garment comprising a body portion and leg portions separated by a crotch, one of the leg portions at the upper end thereof and adjacent to but below the crotch at a segmental portion of said leg near the front thereof being provided with a pair of outwardly-extending and oppositely-disposed pleats having substantially the conformation of right triangles with their hypotenuses inclining in opposite directions to provide therebetween an angular opening converging toward the bottom of the garment leg and communicating with the interior of said garment leg to produce a suspensory pocket, and a lining of soft material within said pocket.
3. A mans garment comprising a body portion and leg portions separated by a crotch, one of the leg portions at the upper end thereof and adjacent to but below the crotch at a segmental portion of said leg near the front thereof being provided with a pair of outwardly-extending and oppositely-disposed pleats having substantially the conformation of right triangles with their hypotenuses inclining in opposite directions to provide therebetween an angular opening converging toward the bottom of the garment leg and communicating with the interior of said garment leg to produce a suspensory pocket, said pleats having bottoms comprising legs of said rectangular triangle which extend in substantial alignment with the bottom of the leg of the garment.
