To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CoRwIN T. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Use in Severing Box-Tops and other Articles, of which the following is a. specification;

The primary object of this invention is to provide a device for use in severing the tops of cigar or other boxes so that a portionof the box top may be removed and a portion remain intact. For example, the most advantageous way to display cigars in boxes in a show case is simply to remove the top of the boxes entirely, thus saving much space which would be wasted Were the tops allowed to remain on. Owing to the presence of the revenue stamp, however, on such boxes, which stamps uniformly are pasted in the form of apaper strip or band over the top and sides of the box near one end, such removal of the entire top would necessitate the removal of a portion of the stamp before all of the cigars weretaken from the box which'would be in violation of the internal revenue laws of the United States. Cigar dealers have therefore adopted the plan of severing the box top adjacent the inside edge of the revenue stamp near'one end of the top and removing from the box entirely the more extended portion of the top on which the revenue stamp does not occur. This leaves all of the top of the box open save a small'strip at and adjacent one end which is covered by theportion of the top bearing the revenue stamp. This permits of ample display of the cigars, and at the same time efi'ects the greatest saving in space. The usual.way of thus severing these tops has been to simply saw vertically through the box top with thetop closed. severing the tops in this way, however, is open to many objections, among which may be mentioned first that sawdust falls in the box with the cigars; second. the likelihood of the abrasion of the cigars by the saw as it Specification of Letters Patent.

passes through the top; and, third, the danger of mutilating the revenue stamp in gettlng the saw started, if one attempts to start the saw very close to the stamp, which is desirable.

The primary object of this invention is to provlde means for severing such tops ad- ]acent the revenue stamps, which shall be free of the above mentioned objections, and which shall at the same time be simple and inexpensive.

In order to more fully describe my said invention reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein,

This invention comprises, among other parts, in the case shown, an elongated fiat preferably metal plate 1, having along its longitudinal edges flanges 2 and 8, the upper edges of which slant from substantially zero at one end of the plate to maximum width at the other end of said plate. These flanges are connected at their wide ends by a flange or plate 4 which may be integral with said

2 and 3 and pla-te'l. This end flange 4 is pivoted with a central vertical slot 5, opening through the upper edge thereof. Secured to the outside of the head or plate 4 on opposite sides of slot 5 are two angle plates 6 and 7, the members 8 and 9 of which are provided with vertical slots 10 and 11. The inner flat face'of the members 8 and 9 register with the edges of the slot 5 and form guides for a saw slidable between said members. In the drawings 12 represents one fo-rmof such saw. This saw is provided with a longitudinal slot 18 and through this slotand through-slots 10 and 11 in the members 8 and 9, passes a bolt 1 provided with washers 15 and 16, and nut 17. This bolt, together with the said slots, forms a loose pivotal connection permitting the saw to move vertically as well as reciprocate longitudinally between said members of'guide 9. 2 and 3 may be provided with one or more teeth. 18 or their equivalent to engage and assist in holding the work being sawed.

In using the device for sawing the tops of cigar boxes, the top of the box to be sawed is opened, the thin edge ot the wedge-shaped trough formed by the plate 1, and

2 and 3, as shown in Fig. 1, and held firmly. The top may then be readily sawed ofl. along the line of the revenue stamp as shown in Fig. 1, the sawdust dropping in the receptacle formed by the plate.

If desired, the saw 12 may be provided with an attachment for opening the box top. In the accompanying drawings I have shown a form of" such device, consisting of a short curved stifli blade 20, having a notch 21 for withdrawing a tack; quite useful, particularly in opening cigar boxes, forms no essential part of this invention and may be used or not as desired.

In the accompanying drawing, 22 indicates the revenue stamp on the cigar box 23.

While I have herein shown and described a form of my said invention this is but one specific embodiment which the said invention may assume. I do not desire, therefore, to be understood as limiting my invention to such specific embodiment; but,

What I claim is:

1. A device for use in severing hinged tops of cigar boxes and the like, comprising an elongated member having a thin edge at one end and an upright portion at its other end provided with a vertical slot to guide a saw longitudinally of said member, in combination with a saw pivotally mounted in said slot for movement to and away from the elongated portion of said member as well as longitudinally thereof, the said member being adapted to act as an insert between the hinged cover of a box of the above character and the contents thereof and to rest upon opposite sides of said box and support the top thereof closed down upon said member.

2. A device for use in severing box tops and other articles, comprising an elongated plate having side flanges slanting long-i tudinally of said plate and tapering oil? at one end of said plate to a point, and a saw guide on the opposite end of said plate for gluiding said saw longitudinally of said ate.

p 3. A device for use in severing box tops and other articles, comprising an elongated plate having side flanges slanting longitudinally of said plate, a flange at one end of said plate and a vertical slot in said end flange.

In a device for use in sawing boxes and other articles, an elongated plate having side flanges slanting longitudinally of said plate, and a saw guide at one end, in combination with a saw mounted to reciprocate in said, guide, longitudinally of said plate.

5. In a device for use in sawing boxes and other articles, an elongated plate having upturned sides inclined longitudinally of said plate, vertical guide plates at one end of said plate, a saw blade mounted to reciprocate between said guide plates and a movable pivot connection between said saw and I said'guide plates, the said guide plates holding the saw in longitudinal alinement with said plate, and said pin and slot connection permitting the said saw to move toward and away from said plate, substantially as described.

7. In a device for use in sawing boxes and other articles, an elongated plate having upturned sides inclined longitudinally of 1 said plate, vertical guide plates at one end a of said plate and provided each with a vertical slot, a saw blade mounted to reciprocate between said guide plates and having a slot extending longitudinally thereof, pivotal connection between said saw and said guide plates comprising a pin or bolt extending through both of said slots, the said guide plates holding the saw in longitudinal alinenient with said plate, and said pin and slot connection permitting the said saw to move toward and away from said plate, substantially as described.

8. In a device for use in sawing boxes and other articles, an elongated plate having upturned sides inclined longitudinally of said plate, and provided with teeth on their upper edges, vertical uide plates at one end of said plate and provided each'with a verti plates holdlng the saw in longitudinal alinement with said plate, and said pin and slot connection permitting the said saw to move toward and away from said plate, substan- 1 tially as described.
