3 Glaims.
This invention relates to: a cutting: device, and more particularly to a device for cutting open cartons, boxes, containers used for packing pure poses.
In the past there have. been provided. several types of carton openers which: usually. provide a. holder for a blade, a handle, and. a guide mem:-- her. In many instances the: blades in the; holder may be fixed loosely to said holder: with the. result that there is a tendency upon continued useof the cutter for the blade: to become loose and to cut the cartonunevenly. Furthermore, when passing such a cutter over the edge of a carton there may be a: tendency-fortheblade during the cutting of the carton to extend. into the interior of the container and damagethe contents" of said container.
In view of the above and. other disadvantages, it is an object of my invention to provide. a car-- ton' opener in which the blade or cutting portion of: said opener extends fromthehandle: of the opener and is disposed atsuch: an angle with respect to the marginal edge of the carton being opened that there is no danger of the contents of the carton being damaged.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a carton opening device of simple, compact and economical construction in which the cutting member forms a permanent and integral part of said device.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a cutting device for paper cartons and the like in which the cutting member of the device is so disposed that it cuts into the carton at a line below the marginal edge of the carton, said cutting being done at an upwardly inclined angle so as to avoid cutting into the contents of the carton.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective, partially fragmental, view of a preferred embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an end sectional view showing the embodiment as applied to a carton so as to cut the marginal edge of said carton;
Fig. 3 is a plan view, partially broken away, of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a plan view showing details of a portion of the embodiment shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3; and
Fig. 5 is a modification of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout, there provided a guide; member I-0- consisting of two faces II and I2;. respectively, disposed at rightvery easily over saidedge of the carton. Face I2 is. provided with a handle member [5 which is, attached. in. anysuitable manner, such as by the use of. screw members I6 extending from said face into the: handle. Itwillbe noted. that the:
handle is provided: with. a slot or groove, 11
adapted. toaccommodate the base It of cutting blade I 9 which isxof substantially triangular shape:
and provided with beveled cutting edges, as shown. Said slot is disposed at an inclined angle with respect to-the longitudinalaxis of said handle while face I2. is provided with an: inclined s1ot2s0 in, alignment. with groove IT in said handie [5; so: as to accommodate a portion ofcutting:
blade I 9", extendingfrom. the handle Hi.
It will be noted that said groove I! in the han- 5 dle is of sufiicient depth and length to rigidly retain the base section I8 of said blade while the slot or groove 20 in said face 12 is of sufficient length to accommodate the base of the blade and. prevent slippage of the same from the face. 0 A modified form of blade 2|, as shown in Fig. 4, is provided having a pair of spaced, terminal- -depending portions 22 and 23 enabling it to fit snugly into a groove 24 of corresponding shape in handle 25. In the modification shown in Fig. 5 it will be noted that the base of blade 2| is provided with a central depending section 26 adapted to fit into a groove 21 of corresponding shape in handle 28. Said blade 2 I has a flat, sharp cutting edge portion 29 to permit the blade at said edge to extend parallel with and adjacent the inner wall 30 of carton l4.
When the device is to be used it is placed so that one of the faces, namely II, is flush against the top of carton M, as shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the face and handle portions l2 and I5 slide against the vertical wall and. blade 19 is forced through that upper marginal area of the carton so that the pointed edge 3| of the blade pierces the vertical wall of the carton and thereby facilitates the cutting operation, as shown, without cutting into any of the contents in the container [4. The angle of said blade l9 as it extends from face [2 into the carton I4 is such that the apical portion does not protrude very far from the inner wall 30 of said carton but instead extends toward the inner horizontal wall 32 of carton l4.
Furthermore, because of the relative position of the cutting edge of the blade in the holder there is produced a diagonal cutting in the vertical wall of the carton adjacent the cover of said carton. In this manner there is produced a clean but inclined cut in the carton. Furthermore, because of the inclined position of the blade, as shown in Fig. 2, there is little likelihood of the blade cutting the user of the device.
The device made according to my invention can be of any suitable material, such as metal, wood, or plastic, and may be of unitary construction in which the blade forms a permanent part of the device. The edges of said blade, while beveled, can be easily sharpened by grinding or filing.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is understood that changes as to form, material, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A cutting device of the class described for opening corrugated cartons and the like at a line parallel with the corner to be cut, comprising a member having a pair of faces joined at right angles relatively of each other for sliding over the edge of the carton to be out, a handle member fixed to and extending perpendicularly from one of said faces, and a cutting edge of substantially triangular shape having a base fixed to the handle and its other edges extending angularly from the handle through one of said faces upwardly toward the other face but short of touching said face.
2. A cutting device for opening cartons and the like adjacent their folded marginal edge, comprising a slide member having a pair of faces disposed at right angles to each other and adapted to slide along the corner of the carton to be cut, handle means extending perpendicularly from one of said faces forming part of one of said faces for operating the slide member against the carton in a horizontal or vertical direction, and a triangular shaped blade having one of its sides fixed in the means and extending at an incline therefrom through one of the faces toward the other face adapted to cut through the carton at a sharp incline toward but below the marginal edge without damaging the contents of the carton, said blade being reciprocably movable along the carton edge to cut the same in either direction without cutting or damaging the contents thereof.
3. A device for reciprocably cutting a carton and the like at the corner thereof in an upwardly inclined angle, comprising a right angled member having extending sides slidable along the corner of the carton, one of said sides having an inclined groove therein, a handle fixed to one of the sides extending perpendicularly therefrom, and a triangular shaped cutting member extending through said inclined groove, said cutting memher having an apical carton piercing portion and downwardly inclined cutting edges extending from the apical portion to permit cutting of the carton at a line parallel with the corner but below and at an incline relatively thereto to prevent contact with the contents of the carton, said handle having an inclined seating groove for one of the sides of the triangular shaped member, said cutting member being movable in either direction along the corner of the carton.
