CIGAR BOX AND STAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 20, 1909.
Application filed April 23, 1908. Serial No. 428,842.
T 0 on whom it may concern: Be it known that I, SAMUEL Rosnn'rrmn, a citlzenof the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar Boxes and Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide simple, convenient, and cheap means for removing the top of a cigar box without del stroying the internal revenue stamp and, in l order to clearly explain my said invention, I have provided the annexed sheet of drawings in which Figure l is a perspective view of a cigar box embodying my present improvement, the revenue stamp being shown intact. Fig. l 2 is a similar View showing the top portion 1 of the'stanip turned back. In Fig. 3 I have 1 shown, detached, a novel form of label, or i sticker which I use for securing the revel nue stamp to the top of the box, whichl sticker forms the essential feature of this invention. l
Referring to these drawings the numeral 1 10 indicates the cigar box and 11 the top.
After having packed the cigars in the box l and having nailed the top thereon, I attach to the top at the point where the stamp 12 is to be located, a sticker 13 substantially 1 of the form shown in Fig. 3, which illusl t-rates the under side or face of the sticker. 1 The said under face is preferably provided l with lines or spots 14: of paste, or other adhesive material, on its opposite edge portions; the unpasted portion between said 1 lines being in width equal to, or slightly 1 wider, than the revenue stamp. After the l sticker has been attached to the top 11 by l means of the described lines 1% of paste, the revenue stamp is pasted around the box and lid in the usual manner, care being taken to paste the top portion of said stamp to the unpasted portion of the sticker, that is to say, to that part of the sticker that is not stuck to the top 11. \Vhen it is desired to open the box the sticker is out along the edges of the stamp or the sticker may be perforated as at 15 so as to tear readily along the perforations. The stamp is then broken at one edge only of the box when it (the stamp) may be raised and turned back out of the way when the top 11 (and the attached portions of the sticker) may be removed from the box, thus exposing for sale the contents of the box but leaving the stamp attached to said box, as required by law.
Having thus described my invention I claim 1.. In combination with a cigar box, a top removably secured thereto, a sticker attached at its edge portions only to the said top, and a tax stamp inclosing said box and secured to the unattached portion of the said sticker.
2. A box, a cover, a tax stamp, and means secured to the cover and supporting that portion of said stamp which extends across the cover out of contact with the cover.
3. A box, a cover, a tax stamp, and means having a portion unattached to the cover and interposed between said stamp and cover and secured to the cover and supporting that portion of said stamp which extends across E the cover.
SAMUEL ROSENTHAL.
