UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
CHRISTIAN A.l KRUM, OF-BUR-BANK, CALIFORNIA.
Box-EAsTEN'ING.
' To all whom t may concern:
vices provide-d in the -construction of boxes,
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAL1 A. KRUMI, a citizen of Norway, residing at Burbank,
.in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement 1n Box-I* astenings, of which the following 1s a spcclfication.
This invention relates to fastenlng deand its principal object is to provide a fastening means for boxes built of light Weight material towhich a cover may'be secured without the use of nails, after the boxes have been filled- It is also an object to provide va box fastener with a larger supporting surface on its edge than the thickness of the material of which the box is composed.
Itis also an objectl to provide a cover fastener that will be in a continuous strip and reinforce the 'iedges of the box.
A further object is to provide a combined cover` fastener and holder adapted tov secure a lining in the box.
In the drawings accompanying-this speciication and forming a part of the application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box with a portion pf the cover shown in place and secured by my device; Fig. 2 is 4a perspective sectional` view showing lthe fasten-l ing means in cross section; Fig. 3 is-a pery, spective view of a portion of the fastening device viewed from the inner side; Fig. 4
' Vis a: detailed plan view showingv the notch cut in the material of the fastener, one of the parts being bent: upon itself, shown in dotted lines, to form a corner.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 is a box of the usual form commonly used to pack citrus or other. fruit, with the sides 6-6 forminga rectangular structure on which is placed my fastener 7 formed of a plurality of engaging surfaces or planes, 8, 9 and 10. rIhe materialof which thefasvtening is composed,is preferably a thin sheet of metal of a light but stiff material as sheet steel. Formed upon the engaging plane 8 by pressing in a punch press, or by other means. are the teeth or prongs 11, triangular in form and preferably projecting in a jplane at right angles to that from which they are punched. Previous toforming the first bend in the metallic band, the clamp members or Vfasteners 12 are cut from the metal andare allowed to remain in the same plane, the balance of the band being bent tothe securing plane 8 and adapted to engage `the edge and form a shelf or reinforcement for the same.
To further strengthen the box and insure the ylocking of the teeth. in the material of 1 the box and form a holder for a lining, the
metalis further bent upon itself to form a plane 10 which bears upon the inner surface and clamps the Whole securely to the box;
l To pnoyide the most economical form, the fastener is preferably built of a continuous strip and atthe proper intervals, to register with'dthe corners ofthe box, notches or recesses 13 are cut in the two planes 9 and 10,
preferably triangular in section so that the plane 8 carrying the fastening membersI l may be bent upon itself at the point 14, the
corner 15 of the notch being folded under plane 9 when the bend is made, thus form-- ing a stiff and strong corner.
As will be readily seen, as the clamp or box securing lug 12 is cut previous to the bend it projects in the same plane as the side of the box and the 'cover 16 is readily dropped. into position and the lugs `bent over along the line 17, the metal having been punched in such a form that this line 17 occupies the position of the least resistance in the formation of thel lug. It will also be readily Lseen that if a suiicient ductile material .is used, the lugs may be readily turned over by manual means withoutjarring the articles contained in the. box, tne contained articles frequently being. very delicate, and the lugs may be turned back again to release the cover without material injury.
What I claim is:
1. A box fastener, comprising a flat metallic band bent upon itself to form a chane neled structure having a gripping edge and a plurality of oppositely disposed securing means formed integral' with said band, a portion of said band forming a supporting shelfr intermediateof said gripping edge and the securing means,'and integral clampplanes to one side of saidl exterior plane be-A Specication of Letters Patent! Patented A pr. 28, 1914.J i Application sied June 19, 1912.v serial Nq. 704,589.
- forma plane o1" shelf Swat right angles to ing out transversely to form a triangular notch on the intermediate plane, to adapt the exterior plane to be bent at the apex of said notch and the portion of said out intermediate plane overlapping when so bent to brace the corner of said strip when embracing a box corner.
In witness that I claim the foregolug l have hereunto subscribed my name this 11th day of June, 1912.
CHRISTIAN A. KRUM.
