ROBERT STUDER, OF SAN `JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
HOOP.
Specification of Letters Patent. i
Patented June 23, 19Wz Application filed' January 9, 1:20a serial No. 409,992.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT STUDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoops; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-
This invention hasl relation. to new and useful improvements in hoops and has for its object to provide simple and inexpensive v,means whereby the ends of a hoop may be securely connected together in the event of In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a view in side elevation of a portion of a' hoop body with the invention applied as a connection for the ends of the h'oop. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on theplane indicated by the dotted lines 2-2o'f F-ig. 1 Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one `of the cooperating clips or fastening members,
and Fig. 5 is asimilar view of the other clip or fastening member l lburst apart.
.In the embodiment illustrated, 1, indicates .the body of a hoop of ordinary construction represented as having its ends separated or Thenumeral 2 indicates v, the fastening l y means for the ends of the hoop. This fasten-- ing means comprises two coperating metallic clips or' connecting members, 3 and'f4, respectively, bent inwardly at their outer side edges to formV inwardly extending anges, 5,
adapted to be interlocked or engaged withA b el'. j4 A In testimony whereof I .have hereunto the edges ofthe hoop body. p s y The inner side edge of clip 3, is inclined at a suitable angle with its outer or opposite edge A and is bent outwardlyat said edge to form an' the inner-.side e outwardly extending inclinedrflange, 6, while site direction, and is bent inwardly to form an inwardly extending locking flange 7, adapted to be enga ed or interlocked with the flange 6, of mem er 3, when the clips are employed as fastening means for the ends of the hoop body.
In practice, the clips are arranged at op osite side edges of the hoop body and after having their outer .,llanges, 5,. engaged or interlocked with the side' edges of the hoop body, and their inner side edges interlocked or engaged are driven together until in proper position, whenthe clip flanges 5, 5 are batl tered down to cause them to' tightly bind or engage'the hoop ends.
From the construction disclosed and defined it will be readily perceived that through the use of, the two cooperating clip members, should the hoop burst, its ends may be readily and easily connected together without having to removevthe hoop and without the usual punchingy and riveting operations, and
the ends of the hoop caused to tightly ernbrace the barreLtank, or other object to which it may be applied; y
Having thus described the nature of my invention, what I`claimas new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1.. In combination with a hoop, upper and lower coperatin clip members, provided with outer inward y bent side flanges adapted to enga'`` the opposite edges of the hoop ends 'an `,w inner side flanges adapted for interlockinggengagement.
2. In combination. with a hoop an upper clip member formed-with an outer inwardly.' bent side flan e and an inner outwardly bent side Han e, t e latter being disposed atan angle wit the former' and the former bein ada ted to enga e the upper edge ,of one len of t e hoop an a second coperatingclip I member formed'with an' outer inwardly bent side flange adapted to beenga ed -with the lower edge of the other end o t e hoop, and with an inwardly bent side flange dis osed vatan angle with its outer liange and ein adapted for interlockin engagement wit the inner `side liiange of set my hand in presence .of two subscribing ion
