1/ b all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CONRAD FIELD MEN'D- mm, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 85 Gracechurch street, London, E. 0., England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to the Handles of Umbrellas, Walking-Sticks, Hand-Bags, and the like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the handles of umbrellas, walking sticks, hand-bags and the like, and it has for its object to provide upon the handle or other parts of such articles a needle point adapted to be brought into such position that some part of the hand in the action of taking hold of the handle or other part to which the device is applied would be pierced by the needle, so that thus the persons attention would be drawn to the fact that the article was not his property and thus affording a safeguard against the innocent taking away of umbrellas and other articles that might otherwise be mistaken.

According to the invention I provide the needle point or spike mounted within a reccss provided in the handle or other part of the article to which it is tobe applied in such manner that it may be capable of being withdrawn into a position in the handie where the point is not exposed; while being capable of being set so that the point protrudes sufiiciently to piercesome part of the hand in the act of gripping or engaging the handle. p

Figure 1 represents a. side elevation of an umbrella handle provided with the warning needle device, which is shown in the on position. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of the handle to a larger scale, illustrating the mechanism. Figs. 3 and & represent -rosssections of the casing for the mechanism taken respectively on the lines A B and C D of Fig. 2, also to an enlarged scale. Fig; 5 is an end view showing the engagement between the operating lever and the spring for maintaining the lever in either of its positions.

In carrying the invention-into efieot asillustrated in the drawings, I provide a small plate (Z adapted to carry the device which is inserted within a slot made to receive it in the upper part or in any other position on. the handle. The device comprises a bell crank lever Z; by which the needle point or spike c is brought into operat-ive position or withdrawn into the handle, and this bell crank lever Z) is pivotally I l l l l g i iently form part of the casing containing the mechanism, while suitable means are provided to maintain this bell crank lever Z) in its respective end positions. This is most conveniently effected by the provision of a flat spring e which is curved slightly at the middle portion, so that the curved part of the spring will tend to maintain the needle or spike c in either of its positions. This flat spring 6 is advantageously secured to the plate (Z by means of a rivet, and it will be understood that it is disposed in a position parallel with the direction of movement of the needle or spike.

The needle or spike c is advantageously carried by means of a bolt f which is recessed at one side, the recess being advantageously of an angular form and extending the thickness of the bolt. The inner extremity of the bell crank lever Z) protrudes into this recess while the bolt is so fitted into the recess in the handle or within the containing casing that the arm of the bell crank lever b is always positioned in this recess without the necessity of providing any more positive connection. The needle point or spike c is provided with a part of its stem fitting within a hole made to receive it in the upper part of the bolt and the needle point or spike may be thus fitted in position and secured in that position by any suitable means, for example, it may be screwed into position or may be soldered and the steel point may advantageously be softened so that it may not be liable to break off.

The plate (Z carrying the bell crank lever b and spring 6 may be provided at the top edge with an inturned flange which may be slotted or otherwise suitably provided for the protrusion of the outer extremity of the bell crank lever arm and for the passage of the needle point or spike.
