Beit known that I, CARL MICHEL, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Grenchen, in theRepublic of Switzerland,have

invented a certain new and useful Address- Holder for Umbrellas, Sticks, Traveling-Bags, and other Traveling Objects (for which Ihave obtained a patent Vin Switzerland, No. 538, dated February G, 1889,) of which the followro ing is a specification.

My invention relates to devices adapted to be attached either permanently or temporarily to umbrellas, canes, traveling-satchels, and other similar articles used by travelers,

and has for its object to enable the finder of such articles which are accidentally left or forgotten by the owner in railway-cars, hotels, &c., to promptly ret-urn the same without trouble or outlay.

2o .Vith this object in view my invention consists of the peculiar construction and combination of parts of the address-holder, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, which is adapted to form an attachment to the articles in connection with which it is intended to be used.

Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, Figure l represents a longitudinal sectional view of my improved address-holder. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on line x m. Fig. 3 is a side view of an umbrellahandle or cane-handle provided with this attachment. Fig. et is a similar viewshowing the manner of using the device; and Fig. 5

is a view of an umbrella or cane handle, illustratin g a slightly-modified form of the attachment and the manner of applying it to the article.

Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.

The letter e denotes the handle of an umbrella or a cane provided with my addressholding attachment, which is shown at CL. This attachment consists simply of a cylindrical box made of metal or other suitable materiahof convenient size, and terminating at its lower end in `a solid bottom b', which has a screw-threaded central aperture, (shown at g.) The top of this box is closed by a plug b2, the 'under side of which is preferably beveled, as shown in Fig. l, so as to fit watertight against the beveled top rim of t-he cylinder a. Fastened in and projecting downwardly from the center of the plug b2 is a 5J stem or spindle b, the lower end of which is enlarged to form a disk b3, below which said stem or spindle terminates in a screw b', adapted to be screwed into the threaded aperture g in .the lower end of the box. The 6o latter may be attached to the handle of the umbrella in many various ways, and, among others, it may befastened thereto by means of a metallic strap or band (l, as shown in Figs. and 4; or, if desired, the body of the 65 handle may be provided with a cylindrical recess or bore, as shown at f in Fig. 5, adapted to it the box a, which in that case may be screw-threaded on the outside, so that it may be screwed into the recess and held rmly in 7o place therein. Where that construction is adopted, the plug or cover b2 may be provided with a notch for its removal with the aid 0fl a screw-driver or other implement.

Around the stem or spindle b is wound a ticket or label c, made of parchment paper, leather, soft metal, or any other suitable fieXible material possessing` sufficient strength, and this labelhas inscribed upon it the name and address of the owner of the article to 8o which the device is attached. It may also be provided with one or more postage-stamps, insuring the prepayment of the article if the same is to be transmitted to its owner through the mails. Under normal conditions this label 8 5 is contained Within the cylindrical box or holder a, where it is entirely out of the Way of injury by rain or dampness. The cylindrical box or theknob or cover thereof should be provided with a suitable inscription re- 9o questing the nder of the article to unscrew the top and afX the label in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4, and then deposit the article in the nearest post-office.

"To facilitate the attachment of the addresslabel, the same may be provided at one end with a hole sufficiently large for the insertion of the stem or spindle'b, which is then again fastened in the box by screwing its lower threaded end into the threaded aperture g in roo the bottom of the box. In this manner the label will be held firmly in place, as shown in Fig. l, in a conspicuous positolnand after the article in question has been deposited at the post-office it will be returned withoutI any expense or o utlay on the part of the finder to its proper owner, according` to the'address given on the label.

The object of the enlargement or disk b at the lower end of the spindle l) is to insure the withdrawal ot the address-label from the box upon the removal of the knob (f3, as, in the absence of this enlargement at the lower end of the spindle, the lat-ter would slip through the label without carrying it with it.

Having thus described my invention, I elairn and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The detachable address -label holder herein described,eonsistingof the cylindrical box a, having a threaded aperture in its lower end, in combination with the knob or cover 112 and central stem or spindle I), provided with the disk or enlargement b3 and screw-threaded projection Z1', substantially as and `for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with an umbrella or similar portable article, of the herein-de scribed add ress-label and holder for the saine, the same comprising the cylindrical box c, the knob b2, having Spindle b, provided at its lower end with the enlargement U and screwthreaded projection 71', flexible address-label e, and means, substantially as described, for attaching the box, with its contents, upon the article to which it is to be atlixed, snbstantially as and for the purpose set forth.
