Be it known that I, CHARLEY A. OLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Peter, in th county of Nicolet and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Lnprovements in Pen-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a new and useful pen-extracting device and has for its pri mary object the provision of a means for extracting a worn-out pen from the pen holder without necessitating the handling of the pen with the fingers.

Another object of this invention is the provision of a receptacle for receiving the worn-out pens after the same have been extracted from the holder.

Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a'perspective View of the improved pen-extracting means showing the pen inserted therein in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device; and, Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 designates a receptacle which is shown in the drawings as being rectangular in shape, having an upstanding guide-way or handle portion 2 formed upon one end of the same. The sides of the receptacle 1 are bent inwardly as is shown at 4: so as to prevent the soiled or worn-out pens from falling out of the receptacle 1, should the same be overturned upon the desk or the like.

Formed integral with and extending upwardly at an angle from the receptacle 1 opposite to that upon which the portion 2 1s formed is a plate 5. The plate 5 has its edges 6 and 7 bent upwardly at angles to the main body portion of the same as is clearly shown in the drawings. A cut-out portion 8 is formed in the plate 5 near the free end of the same and has the two ends 9 and 10 of a resilient member 11 extending therethrough. The resilient member 11 is Specification of Letters Patent.

preferably constructed of wire and bent substantially U-shaped having its connected central portion 12 held securely adjacent the under surface of the plate 5 by means of a band 13 which is formed integral with the plate 5 and cut-out of the same. The ends 9 and 10 of the member 11 are curved upon themselves as at 14 so as to form a means for conveniently gripping the two ends 9 and 10 and pressing them together.

When it is desired to extract a worn-out and soiled pen from the holder, the pen is inserted through the cut-out portion 8 between the two curved portions 15 of the ends 9 and 10 and the two ends 9 and 10 of the resilient member 11 are pressed together by means of the handle portions 14:. By pressing the two ends 9 and 10 together the pen is securely gripped therebetween and by an upward jerk upon the pen holder the pen will be extracted from the same and when the pressure is relieved from the handle portions of the ends 9 and 10 of the member 11 the pen will fall into the interior of the receptacle 1 from which it may be removed when desired."

In practical fields, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled, provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.

What is claimed is 1. A pen extractor comprising a receptacle, a support extending above said receptacle and provided with a slot, and pen gripping means carried by said support and extending through said slot, said pengripping means being formed from a strip of resilient material bent intermediate its length to provide a pair of arms, said arms being secured adjacent their connected ends to the inner face of said support and being bent away from said support and passed through the slot of said support and bent back upon themselves to form operatingv themselves to form operating handles whereby said arms may be moved toward each other to grip a pen inserted into said slot between said arms.

3. A pen extractor comprising a support provided with an opening, and pen gripping means formed of resilient wire secured to the inner face of said support and passed through said opening and bent back above said support to form handles whereby said gripping means may be moved to engage a pen inserted through said opening between said gripping means.

4. A pen extractor comprising a receptacle, guard flanges extending inwardly from the sides of said receptacle, a tongue extending from one end of said receptacle and forming a handle portion, a second tongue extending from the opposite end portion of said receptacle and forming a support provided with an opening, and pen gripping means secured to the under face of said support and passing through said opening and bent back above said support to form handle means for said pen gripping means.
