IRONINGBOARD.
To @ZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM B. Trina MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Madera, in the county of Madera and State of California7 have invented new and useful Improvements in ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a means in combination with an ironing board whereby the latter may be conveniently, quickly and substantially connected and adjusted with relation to a table.
The object of the present invention is to provide a substantial but simple clamp for ironing boards whereby the latter may be,
with great facility, rigidly and firmly connected to a table or other supporting element.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the ironing board. Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. l.
The present invention comprehends a support and clamp in combination with an ironing board, as 2, to the lower surface of which there is attached at a suitable distance from one end of the board a transverse bearing 3. This bearing is channeled on its lower side as at 4 in the direction of the length of the board 2 and is adapted to receive a portion of the lever 5 between the sides of the channel. A centrally located bolt 6 projects downwardly from the bearing 3 through the recess or channel portion 4, and passes loosely through an alined opening in the lever 5 in such manner as to allow a limited rocking or universal movement thereof. The shorter arm of the lever 5 projects forwardly from the bearing 3; the end of the arm being substantially even with the end of the board. The upper surface of the lever or clamp is spaced sufficiently from the lower surface of the board 2 to permit the insertion between the two members of a shelf or table to which it may be de sired to temporarily attach the structure. The distance of the shorter end of the clamping lever 5 from the adjacent parallel end of the board may be determined by advancing or receding nuts 7 which are ad justable upon the post G depending from the bearing 3.

Serial No. 676,423.
When it is desired to clamp the board to j a table, the lever 5 is rocked about its support or post 6 by means of a cam lever or frame 8, pivoted at 9 adjacent to the end of the longer part of the lever 5, and provided with a friction or cam surface 10 adapted to swing into binding engagement with the lower surface of the ironing board 2 and thus force the operative or short end of the lever 5 into clamping contact with the ledge or top of the table indicated at A. rlhe lower end of the frame 8, when so swung as to cause the lever 5 to clamp the table, rests on the iioor and serves as a support for the board. The cam lever 8 may be swung sufficiently about its pivot 9 on the lever 5 so as to spring the lever 5, thus producing ample friction or gri aping effect of the clamping end of the )lever 5 against the table top. I lock the thrust lever 8 in adjusted supporting position by using a locking rack bar ll which is pivoted at l2 to the outer end of the ironing board; the bar 1l being provided with a number of notches 13, one of which may be adjusted over a pin 14 extending transversely through the strut or cam lever S.
By means of the great leverage of the member about its fulcrum 9, the cam l0 of the member 8 can be forced with great pres sure against the underside of the ironing board, and this in turn exerts great force on the outer or longer end of the lever 5 to bring its shorter clamping end against the underside of the table 2 with great force. By undercutting or recessing, as at 1G, that end of the ironing board which overlies the table A so as to form bearing surfaces 17 adjacent to the sides of the board, and by locating the operative clamping face of the lever 5 substantially midway between the bearing surfaces 17 of the board, the pressure of the clamping lever 5 will tend to draw the bearing surfaces 17 with great friction against the top of the table and prevent relative movement of the board and the table as long as the locking device 8 is swung so as to bear against the underside of the board 2.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the means for locking the board in relation to a suitable support consists primarily of a resilient lever, as 5, of the first order, one end of which serves as a clamp when pressed into engagement with the supporting member to which the board is to be temporarily attached; this pressinof of the lever 5 being accomplished by rocking it on its support, as the 0st G, by means of a cam lever fulcrume on the end of the lever opposite to its clamping end.
lVhen the ironing board is not in use the locking lever 8 may be swung about its pivot 9 on the clamp 5 until it is carried over a latch 15 near the outer end of the board; the latch being adapted to be turned over to engage a brace or transverse rod 1Ga adjacent to the free end of the lever S. This means of latching the frame 8 prevents it from falling or swinging about when the device is out of use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In a device of the class described, a board, a recessed block secured to said board on the under side and near one end thereof, a bolt a limited universal movement, a cam leverv carried by saidV lever and cooperating with `said board to support the same, and an independently adjustable,` rack bar pivoted to the outer end of the board andengageable with the cam lever to hold the parts-in adjusted position. v
In testimony whereof I-have hereunto set `my hand in the presence of two subscribing' witnesses.
