PATENT OFFICE.
DAvID MILLSPAUGH, oFANDnRsoN, INDIANA.
noon-GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,873, dated January 5, 1904.
Appiication led June 13, 1903. Serial No. 161.353. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID MILLSPAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Door-Gage, of which the following is a speci-v in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa perspective viewA of my gage.:
Fig. 2 is a plan view of same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the gage. Fig. 4: is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is an end view.
ln constructing my gage l employ a smooth bar A, having adjacentone end upwardly and downwardly projecting points A A2, extending from its upper 'and iower sides, respectively. Sliding loosely on this bar is a clip B, having a downwardly-extendingflange B', the rear side of said flange facing the point A2, presenting a smooth vertical surface, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The gage proper comprises an openv rectangular frame C, having along its rear side a vertical flange C'. Extending rearwardly from intermediate the ends of this flanged side is an integral straight arm C2, the said arm terminating in a vertical ange C3 and depending guide-lugs C4. The arm C2 rests and slides on the upper surface of the bar A and through the clip B, the lugs C4 sliding on the sides of the bar and guiding the rear hanged end of the arm.
The front side member of the frame C is extended rearwardly parallel to the arm, as shown at C5, and is longitudinally slotted, as
arm' C2, binding it to the bar.
shown at C5. The forward end member of the frame C projects beyond and at a right angle to the slotted member and terminates in a point C7. A thumb-screw B2 works in the upper end of the clip and bears on the A movable pointer slides along the slotted member C5, the said pointer consisting of the thumbpiece D, having a shank extending upward through the slot and carrying at its upper end the pointer-head D'. This pointer fits snugly-in the slot, so that when moved to any desired position along the member C5 it will be held in place until it is againv desired to move it. v
By loosening the thu rnb-screw the arm can move along the bar, and the clip can move on both bar and arm. The thickness of the hinge can be gaged between the point A and the lange'C3 and the width of the hinge between the point A2 and the flange B and the thumb-screw tightened, preventing further movement of the clip and arm relative to the bar. By sliding the pointer, The length ofthe hinge can begaged by thepoint C7 and pointerhead-D. It will be seen, therefore, that the gage will show at the same time lthe three dimensions of the hinge. The rectangular frame can be used asa square, and the flange C, which is at right angles to the slotted nmember and arm, can also be restedagainst the door or 'door-frame andwill serve as a square.
` Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. -A device ofthe kind described, comprising a bar having points arranged on opposite sides of the bar, a rectangular frame having an arm sliding on said bar, a clip sliding on the bar and arm, `a sliding pointer-head carried by the frame, and means for clamping the clip to the arm and bar.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a bar, points projecting above and below the bai adjacent one end, a rectangular frame having a rearwardly-extendingfarm, said arm sliding on the bar andhavingguide-iugs engaging the sides of the bar, said frame having also a rearwardly-extending slotted side member, a pointer sliding iu said slot, a clip slid- ICO the flanged member of the frame, said arm sliding on the bar and having a vertical flange at its rear end, a clip sliding over said arm and bar and havinga depending fiange, means for looking the clip and arm in position, and a pointer sliding in the slot of the side member of the frame.
DAVID MILLSPAUGH.
