EDMUND FRAN'IZ, OF ENID, OKLAHOMA.
POST.
Application filed June 1, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND FRANTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enid, in the county of Garfield and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to metallic fence posts, and has for its object the production of a durable and efficient post so shaped as to give it a maximum strength.
The more specific object of the invention is the production of a durable and eflicient post having self contained wire gripping self-locking slot-s or sockets for securely holding and automatically locking therein either single or double twisted strands of wire preventing the same from becoming inadvertently detached.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, novel'shapes, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a series of posts with semicircular elliptical or curved backs showing wire strands connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper end of one of the posts showing the locking band in position. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the post shown in Fig. 2.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that a series of posts are illustrated showing the wire strands connected thereto. These posts are each provided with a body portion 1 which is semicircular curved or elliptical in cross section and is provided with a centrally arranged outwardly extending partition rib or web 2. The rib or web extends beyond the out-er edge 3 of the body portion 1 and the rib or web is provided with a plurality of wire gripping selflocking slots or sockets 4 formed upon its outer edge. These slots or sockets 4: are each provided with an upper and lower lip 5 so ingeniously formed and spaced as to admit into the slot or socket a double strand of wire when the strand is inserted edge- Specification of Letters Patent.

wise, and which, when it is released and resumes its normal position is not likely to be accidentally removed. These lips 5 are pro vided with inwardly turned ends 6 which have their outer faces slightly beveled as at 7 for facilitating the entrance of the wire within the slot or socket 4. The inwardly turned ends at 6 are adapted to overhang the wire strand which rests in the slot or socket 4 and against the edges 3 of the body portion 1 and resist any upward or downward movement of the wire strands within the aperture 4 thereby making it necessary to bulge the wire inwardly in order to insert it in the slot or socket 101" to remove the same therefrom. A binding action will, therefore, be produced between the inner edge of the lips forming the slot or socket and the outer edges 3 of the body 1, thus locking and clamping the wire in a set position.
A cylindrical band or sleeve 8 is employed for holding the wire in place, and is rotatably mounted upon the overhanging lips 5 with its edge portions in spaced relation. If desired, the edges may be brought together, thus preventing the sleeve from working loose. This sleeve 8 prevents any danger of the wire working out between the lips 5, and there is, therefore, no danger of the wire becoming disconnected from the post.
What is claimed is 1. A fence post comprising a body portion provided with wire receiving pockets and having lips overhanging the entrance to said pockets, and a locking sleeve for each pocket rotatably mounted upon the overhanging lips.
2. A fence post comprising a body portion provided with a wire receiving pocket and having lips overhanging the entrance to said pocket, and locking means for said pocket rotatably mounted upon said lips.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDMUND FRANTZ.
