FENCE-POST CONSTRUCTION.
v Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led January 6, 1911.
Patented Sept. 19, 1911.
serial No. 601,230.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TI-InoDoRE lV. SGHAE- FER, of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence- Iost Construction; and I do hereby declare the fo-llowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved fence post construction,-the object of the invention being to provide a reinforced concrete post which shall be substantial and adapted for the ready attachment thereto of fence wires with the use of improved securing means.
A further object is to construct a concrete post in such manner that ample drainage for the slot through which the wires pass will be afforded.
A further object is to construct a reinforced concrete post and wire attaching means therefor, in such manner that the same shall be economical and durable, and easy to operate.
lVith these objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a fence post embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a face view; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 4: is a transverse section; Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of a portion of a post, illustrating the wire attaching means; Fig. 6 is an enlarged face view of the fastener, and Fig. 7 is a view showing a slight modification.
1 represents a fence post made of concrete and having a general tapering shape,-the wide lower portion of which constitutes a base for the post to be embedded -in the ground. In one face of the post, the same is provided with an elongated groove 2 which extends from the base portion of the post approximately to the upper end of the latter. The post is also formed with an alined series of elongated slots 3 which communicate with the groove 2 and extend trans versely through the post. The slots 3 are separated from each other by portions 4L of concrete and the post is reinforced transversely at points where these connecting concrete portions occur, by means of transversely disposed wire mesh 5 embedded in the concrete of the post. The post is reinforced longitudinally by means of a plurality of wires or rods 6 which may extend approximately from end to end of the post. Fence wires 5 are secured to the post at any desired vertical adjustment by fastening means which will now be described.
Each fastener comprises a wedge shaped block 8 having a serrated face 9 seated in the bottom of the groove 2 of the post and having a hole 10. The fastener also includes a wedge shaped block 1 1 having a hole 12, and a wedge 13 provided with an elongated slot 14. The wedge 13 is disposed between the wedge blocks 8 and 11 and is provided on its respective faces with ribs 15 to enter grooves 16 and 17 in the adjacent faces of the wedge blocks 8 and 11. A rod or wire 18 passes through the slot 3 of the post and through the wedge members 8 and 13 and into the wedge member 11. The rod or wire 18 is threaded at one end and the threads enter a correspondingly threaded opening in the member 11 or the member 11 may be made with a plain hole for the passage of the threaded end of the rod and a nut 19 placed on the latter, as shown in Fig. 7. The other end of the rod or wire 18 is made with a hook 20 which engages the fence wire 7 or a plurality of such wires), which bear against the post throughout the width of the latter. To accommodate several fence wires, the hook 20 will be provided with a plurality of notches 22. When the rod or wire 18 shall have been secured into the member 11 or when the nut 19 shall have been screwed home, and the hooked end of said rod or wire is caused to engage the fence wire or wires, the latter can be tightly clamped against the post by driving the wedge 13 between the wedge blocks 8 and 11. The free end of the hook 20 will project into the slot 3 in the post, and the rod or wire 18 will thus be effectually prevented from turning.
It is apparent that the fastening device above described can be located in the groove in the post at any desired position between the limits of a slot 3 so that the fence wires can be made to assume proper position relatively to each other and to the ground, regardless of irregularities in the ground in the planting of the posts. v x
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a fence post having a slot therein, of a Wedge block having a serrated face to bear against the post, a Second Wedge block, both of said wedge blocks having holes, a slotted wedge between said wedge blocks, and a rod passing through the wedge blocks and wedge and the slot in the post, said rod having a hook at one end to Aengage a fence wire and provided at its other end with means to engage one of said wedge blocks.
2. The combination with a fence post having a slot, of two wedge blocks having holes and each having grooves in one face, a Wedge disposed between said wedge blocks, said wedge having' ribs to enter the grooves in the wedge blocks and having an elongated Copies of this patent may be obtained for slot, a rod passing through the wedge blocks and the wedge and through the slot in the post, said rod having a hook at one end to engage a fence wire and threaded at the other end to engage one of said Wedge blocks.
3. The combination of a fence post having a groove and a transverse slotcommunicating with said groove, a plurality of coperating Wedge members located in the groove in the post, the intermediate wedge member having a slot, a rod passing freely through two of said Wedge members and having threaded connection with the outer wedge member, said rod passing through the slot in the post and having a hook at its free end to engage a fence wire.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THEODORE W. SCHAEFER.
