FENCE-POST.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. NORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Whitley, in the county of Whitley, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fence posts and it has particular reference to a monolithic structure, in which fastening staples for the strands of the fence wire are molded into the post, and in which keys are employed to cooperate with said staples in holding the wires.
In connection with the fence post constructed generally as above described, the invention aims as a primary object to provide a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the details of which will appear in the course of the following description in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts, throughout theseveral views, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the manner of use of a fence post constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the locking key.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates the posts and the numeral 2, theparallel strands of the fence wire, the latter being connected and reinforced by vertical 'stay wires 3 articulated in any well known manner.
Embedded in the posts 1 are staples 4, the bow shaped portions of which project beyond the front face of said posts. Keys 5 are passed through the alined bow shaped portions of the staples 4, and are arranged vertically of the posts. The keys 5 at their upper ends are formed with hooks 6, which engage the uppermost staple as a hanger and along their body portion with sinuous Specification of Letters Patent.

convolutions 7, to accommodate the strands 2. It will thus be seen that the staples 4 and the strands of wire 2 engage the alternatelconvolutions of the keys 5. This arrangement not only facilitates the retention of the strands 2 against play or displacement, but it likewise serves to prevent surreptitious removal of the keys 5. Attention is directed to the fact the hooks 6 project at right angles to the convolutions. By this arrangement the hooks prevent any rotation of the keys and thereby hold the same in operative position.
The invention is simple in its structural details, inexpensive to manufacture and practical and efficient in use.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efficient means are provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a fence structure of staples carried by said structure, and looking keys passing through said staples and formed. with convolutions to 'accommodate wire strands, each key having means contacting with the structure to prevent the rotation thereof.
2. The combination with a fence structure of staples carried by said structure, and looking keys assing through said staples and formed with convolutions to accommodate wire strands, each key having an end formed into a hook extending at right angles to theconvolutions and contacting with the structure to prevent rotation of the keys.
