WIRE FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,322, dated June 16, 1896.

Application filed March 6, 1894. Serial No. 502,574. (No model.)

Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. RANDALL, of Le Boy, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in W'ire Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this application.

My improvement relates to a wire fence composed of longitudinal cables at top and bottom, and a filling of loops fitting one over another and provided with vertical lengths which are coiled around the longitudinal cables.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of a portion of fence, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of fencestrip.

A indicates a fence. In Fig. 1 it is shown composed of two longitudinal cables 0 a, made i of twisted wire, and a series of loops 1) b 19, forming the filling. These loops are interlocked one over another, as shown, and are provided with vertical lengths c c, which are extended outward at right angles to meet the cables, and are attached to the latter by being coiled around the same, as shown at d cl.

Fig. 2 shows a fence-strip provided with a single set of loops, but the number may be increased to any desired width. The strips are attached one above another to posts in the usual way. The loops are of greater diameter at their closed than at their open end, by which means when the fence is drawn tant'the loops become elastic and the tension takes up any slack produced by expansion, the effect being similar to that described in my patent dated March 17, 1891, and numbered 448,455.

The design of this invention is to improve the fence described in said patent by using the longitudinal cables a a at top and bottom. By this means the fence is made stiff and strong and will not materially depress under weight; whereas, in the fence covered by the original patent, the only support is the loops themselves, and if weight is applied on top the fence is liable to sag and lose form.

Having described my invention, I do not claim, broadly, a fence consisting of wire cables at top and bottom and in intervening filling of crossed wires. Neither do I claim, broadly, a fence made of wire loops interlocked.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A wire fence, consisting of wire cables at top and bottom, and an intermediate filling consisting of a series of vertical wires attached at their ends to the cables and bent at right angles into lateral loops of greater diameter at their closed than at their open ends, the loops of the successive wires being interlocked, and forming an elastic fabric, as herein shown and described.
