W. P. RANDALL.
. FENCE.
No. 448,455. PaAzmlueci Mar. 17, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM P. RANDALL, OF LE ROY, NEW YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,455, dated March 17, 1891.
Application filed August 4, 1890. Serial No. 361,006. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM P. RANDALL, of Le Boy, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawin accom pan ying this application.
My improvement relates to wire fences; and it consists of a fence made up of a series of wire lengths provided with loops, which are interlocked and so arranged that thetension on the fence produces an elastic action, thereby keeping the fence tight and straight at all times.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation showing a portion of the fence constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view showing one of the top loops. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing one of the intermediate loops.
The fence is composed of a series of vertical wires a C6 a, which are bent outward at intervals, forming loops Z) Z). These loops are of larger diameter at the outer than at the inner end, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In making the fence the loops of one wire are formed around the loops of that already made and drawn to the end thereof and until the ends abut with the vertical length. These loops form the longitudinal strands of the fence, while the vertical wires form the filling. Any desired number of the strands may be used, and they may be located at any desired distance apart. Seven are shown in the drawings, those at the top and bottom being located nearer together than those in the center. The filling-wires may also be located near together or far apart, as desired, the distance being regulated by the lengths of the loops. As fast as the wires are interlocked the upper and lower projecting ends 6 are bent over in hook form, as indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 2, thus securing the parts and preventing disengagement.
When tension is applied to the fence in putting it up, it yields by the springingof the loops, not only keeping the fence taut and straight longitudinally, but also drawing on the wires vertically. Any yieldirg of the fence under variations in temperature will be compensated for by the elastic action of the loops. Therefore the fence will remain firm and solid under all circumstances, differing in these respects from those fences where the longitudinal wires are unyielding and no elastic action can be produced on the fence.
This fence is flexible and at the sametime equally strained in all directions, sot'natonly its tensile strength is used. It has great tensile strength, because it has no rank curves nor twists, thus saving the life of the wire. It provides for expansion and contraction, because the motion is complete with each separate set of loops.
. This invention is applicable not only to fences, but also to other purposes, such as piazza, window, and tree guards, trellises for vines, &c. The fence is attached by staples to posts in the ordinary way.
llaving described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A'fence consisting of a series of vertical wires provided with lateral loops, which are interlocked, said loops forming the longitudinal strands of p the fence and the vertical lengths the filling, as herein shown and described.
2. The fence herein described, consisting of a series of vertical wires to a, provided with lateral loops 1) b of greater diameter at their outer than at their inner ends, said loops forming the longitudinal strands of the fence and the vertical wires the filling, and said loops acting as springs to straighten the fence under tension, as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
W. P. RANDALL.
