- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. TAFFLINGER, OF SENECA FALLS. NEW YORK.
COUPLING FOR WIRES AND BANDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372.579, dated November 1, 1887.
Application filcd July 130, 1887. Serial No. 245,718.
(No model.)
.To all whom, it Duty concern.-
Be it known that 1. CHARLES E. TAFFLIN- GER. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca and StateofNew York, haveinvented certain new and useful Itnprovements in Couplings for Wires and Bands; and i do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to Inakeand use the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention-and is a vertical section taken where the broken linemazis marked on Fig.2. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section taken where the broken line :l/fI/lS marked on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the coupling-block.
The invention relates to improvements in wire-couplings, referring more particularly to all kinds of electric wires or cables; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A and B represent two wires, having their adjoining ends curved or formed into hooks a b, respectively.
0 is a coupling-block, provided with a longitudinal opening, D, rectangular, preferably, in cross-section, and having the longitudinal central groove, d, in its floor or inner side.
E is a longitudinal groove made centrally in the roof or outer side of the opening D, but not extending the whole length of the same.
F is a deep circular recess extending from one end of the coupling-block to the outer side of the groove (Z. The recess F and groove E extend from opposite ends of the couplingblock, the end from which the former extends being somewhat larger than the opposite end to give room to make the recess.
To put the parts together the wire A is passed through the opening D and placed in the groove d, and the hook inserted in the recess F, which is made to fit it. A wedge shaped block, G, is then placed in the hook I) of the wire B, the wire lying in a central longitudinal groove, y, in one side of the block, and the point of the hook in a simi ar groove, H, on the opposite side, the latter groove not extencb ing lrom end to end of the block. The wire B and block Gare then inserted into the opening 1), the point of the hook b being outward and in the reverse direction from the point of the hook (I, and the Wires A and B lyingv in contact within the coupling-block. The block G has a cross-section similar to that of the opening D, and binds therein as itenters, on account of its wedge shape, the outer end being the larger. It is evident, then, that any long1tudinal strain or lateral vibration which produces longitudinal strain will bind the parts more tightly together and prevent them from uncoupling.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A coupling for wires, composcd of a coupling-block provided with an opening through which the wires are passed in contact, and a recess to receive the hooked end of one wire, and a wedge-shaped block inserted in the hook at the end of the other wire, and, together with the wire, inserted into the opening in the coupling-block at the end opposite the hook of the first wire, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the wires A B, provided with the hooks a b, respectively, the coupling-block provided with the recess F, and the opening D, having the grooves cl and E in opposite sides, and the wedgeshaped block G, provided with the grooves g and H, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OHS. E. TAFFLINGER.
