Be it known that we, lVAnno R. Finmionn and iiminr. BoinLo'r, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compartment-Beds; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to the letters and figures of r ference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

(Eur invention relates to compartment beds, and has for its principal object to provide a structure of that cl'iaracter, comprising a housing and supports for a folding bed arranged in fixed relation to each other to form a permanent sitting room, or the like, when the bed is not. in use; the presentapplication being a division of our copending application, Serial No. 773,77 l.

in carrying out our invention, we provide paired and spaced housings; one of which is adapted for containing the bed frame, and both of which are provided with seats for use in supporting the bed frame when the latter is lowered thereonto; so that the housings and supports not only unite to form the compartment, but also serve as sup- )orts for the bed frame.

in accomplishing the objects of our invention, we have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the spaced housings of our improved compartment bed; the door of one of said housings being open to show the bed frame and its arrangement within the housing. Fig. 11 is a vertical section of the same parts, showing the bed frame lowered onto the housing seats.

across the space between the seats 5 and be supported simultaneously on the seats of both housings; the said front portion having an extension 8 located within its housing and adapted for abutment against the back of the seat when the front is closed, and for projection into the housing when the front is in lowered or open position, as illustrated in the full and dotted lines of Fig. II.

The extension 8 is provided with a countor-weight 9 for balancing the weight of the bed frame and the clothing carried thereby, in order to facilitate the opening and closing of the frame, the detailed construction of the counterwei ht preferably comprising arms 10, which project from the inner ends of the extension and carry the weight 9; the arms being bent to extend the weight forwardly beneath the adjacent seat when the frame is housed, so that when the frame is released from its housing it may swing forward automatically to open the top suitioicntly to enable the operator to grip the end of the frame.

The front portion 6 of the housing 2 comprises a bed frame 11 to which a mattress 12 is attached, and a clothes clamp 13 is preferably pivotally mounted on the frame and adapted to hold the bed-clothing 14E thereto, in order that as the frame is swung inwardly and outwardly relative to the casing, the clothes will be held to the mattress and carried therewith.

The clamp may comprise a U-shaped metal strap, having its ends pivotally mounted in the sides of the bed frame and the base of which overlies the mattress and bed clothing and is held thereto by the hooks 16, which are adapted for locking engagement with pins 17 that project iiiwardly from the sides of the frame. It is apparent that, with this construction, neither the clamp nor its hook will interfere with the travel of the frame into and from the housing, and that when the bed is to be made up the clamp may be unhooked and swung back over the end of the mattress.

As before stated,- the housings 1 are erected permanently in a room of a building, preferably with their ends against an outer wall and their backs against partition walls, so as to take up the leastpossible space; the housings also being preferably located at opposite sides of a window, in order that the con'ipartmcnt formed by the housing may be provided with light.

To properly ventilate the interior of the housing in which the bed frame rests when in idle position, we preferably provide grated openings 18 and 19 through the side and back of the housing, which may open to the outside of the building, and into the air space in the partition respectively. With this arrangement, it is apparent that air entering the lower opening will rise through the housing and about the clothing to pass out through the upper opening.

lVith the housings fixed as described, the compartment may be used as a sitting-room, dining-room, or the like, and when desired, the front of the housing 2 may be lowered on its hinged mounting and supported on the two spaced seats, so that the bed frame and mattress are exposed. The bed may then be made up and the compartment transformed into a bedroom. It is apparent that with a structure of this character, the same space may represent two separate compartments, such as a sitting-room and bedroom, thereby effecting a material saving of space in apartment houses.

Having thus described our invention,what we claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

1. Spaced housings, each provided with a seat, and a bed frame pivotally mounted in one housing and adapted for lowering onto both of said seats.

2. The combination with fixed housings, arranged in spaced relation and comprising facing seats, of a bed frame pivotallymounted in one of the housings and adapted for lowering onto and simultaneous support by both of said seats.

3. The combination with fixed housings arranged in spaced relation and comprising facing parallel seats, of a bed frame hinged at the rear of one of said seats and adapted for inclosure within its housing and for lowering onto and support by both of said seats.

4. The combination with fixed housings arranged in spaced relation and comprising facing parallel seats, of abed frame hinged at the rear of one of said seats and adapted for inclosure within its housing and for lowering onto and support by both of said seats; said frame comprising a portion projeoted into said housing and adapted for abutment against the back of the housing seat when the frame is in closed position.

The combination with fixed housings arranged in spaced relation and comprising facing parallel seats, of a bed frame hinged at the rear of one of said seats and adapted for inclosure within its housing and for lowering onto and support by both of said seats; said frame comprising a portion projected into said housing and adapted for abutment against the back of the housing seat when the frame is in closed position, and a counterweight on the inner end of said frame, within the housing.

6. The combination with fixed housings arranged in spaced relation and comprising facing parallel seats, of a bed frame hinged at the rear of one of said seats and adapted for inclosure within its housing and for lowering onto and support by both of said seats; said frame comprising a portion projected into said housing and adapted for abutment against the back of the housing seat when the frame is in closed position, arms carried by and projecting from the bottom of said frame, and a weight carried v by said arms and adapted for projection beneath the adjacent seat when the frame is housed.
