FOLDING- BED.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WVALDo R. FILLMORE and ELMER BOILLOT, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Folding Beds; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to folding beds, and more particularly to a bed structure especially adaptable for use in small apartments, and comprising housings which may be erected with and form an integral part of the house and are adapted for containing bed springs, mattress, etc., and which, when the bed is not in use, may serve to set off a portion of a room within which they are contained, to produce a relatively separate alcove.

It is the object of the invention to provide a general structure of this type, and improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein :7

In carrying out our inventlon, we pro vide the permanent housing, heretofore mentioned, preferably built in a compartment, and against permanent partitions which are located a suflicient distance apart to accommodate a bed of ordinary length, and provide each of the housings with a seat, which may be used for the ordinary purpose during the day, or when the bed is not in use, and may serve as supports for the bed frame at night.

The bed parts are divided and pivotally connected with the housings so that they may be contained wholly therein to conceal Specification of Letters Patent.

all of the frame and clothing parts, provision for airing the bed clothing being made by providing a part of the bed frame with a support for the clothing that will retain the clothing away from the mattress when the parts are housed, and by providing the housings with air inlets, preferably leading to the exterior of the building and into the partition walls, the preferred forms for such structure being designated by reference numerals in the drawings.

In the drawings, l-2 designate the housings, which are permanently built in a room and against partition walls, at one end of the room, the housings being of the same height to carry out the idea of an alcove when the bed parts are not in use, and spaced apart a distance sufiicient to accommodate a bed frame therebetween, the housing 1 comprising a lower compartment 3 for containing a short frame and mattress section and an upper cabinet, or the like, 4.

Each of the housings has a seat section 5 extending inwardly therefrom, and, if desired, provided with suitable cushions 6 for forming seats in the alcove, which render the construction particularly useful when the alcove is to be used as a breakfast-room, card-room, or the like.

Pivotally mounted on the rear edge of the seat of the housing 1 is a base 7 which is adapted for cooperation with a hinged member 8 of the housing to form a back for the seat 5 during the daytime, and which carries a bed frame section 9 on its inner face, a mattress, or preferably a box spring section 10 being permanently fixed to the frame so that it will ride therewith when the latter is lowered or raised, and the frame section being preferably channeled to carry a structure of this kind. A head board 11 is preferably permanently attached to the frame so that it may perform the usual function when the bed is made up.

The interior of the housing 2 forms a compartment 13 extending throughout the full height of the housing, and has a seat 14 extending inwardly therefrom toward the opposite seat 5, and adapted for performing the same functions as the first named seat.

A base member 15 is hinged to the rear of the seat let and adapted to swing downwardly, when the bed is to be used. until its free edge rests on the front edge of the seat 5. A bed frame section 16 similar to, but of greater length than the section 9 being fixed to the base 15, the free end of the frame is beveled backwardly and that of the frame 9 forwardly, so that when the longer frame is lowered first it will rest on the seat and the shorter frame may fit thereover to form a lock for the longer part.

The frame 16 carries a box spring section 17, similar to the shorter section 10 and pivotally mounted on the frame 16 is a U member 18 which is adapted to swing over the inner end of the spring box to lie flush on the end of the bed frame, (Fig. H) or to swing toward the inner end of the frame and bind against the spring box at that end thereof, so as to clamp bed clothing 19 against the mattress and support such clothing in folded position thereover, the U mem I her being provided with a hook 20 which is adapted for application to a stud 21 on the bed frame to hold the U frame securely in its holding position.

One of the bed frame members is provided with a latch 22 for connection with a hook 28 on the opposite member, and also with a hook 241, which is adapted for connection with a catch 25 on the seat 5 in order to further insure a cooperative relation of the frame members when the bed is made up, and both of the base or frame portions are provided with catches 26 for holding same in upright position. The inner ends of both of the frames preferably extend inwardly into their housings, past their hinged connection in order to provide length for the bed with a minimum spacing of the housings, and carry weights (not shown) for counter balancing the weight of the frame parts.

In order to not only enhance the appear ance of the structure, but also to rovide for airing the bed clothing during t e daytime, we incline the front bases of the housings backwardly so that the bed frame and mattress sections incline inwardly and down Wardly when housed as illustrated in both of the principal figures, in order that when the bed clothes are folded over the U frame, and supported thereby, they will hang away from the mattress and permit circulation of air thereabout.

In order to secure air for circulation within the housings, and produce the desired ven tilation, we preferably provide an opening through the lower portion of each of the housings which, as the housings are preferably permanently mounted in the building, may extend through the partition walls of the building, to take in fresh air through the gratings 27 similar openings 28 being located at the upper portions of the housings and communicating with the interior of the partition wall, in order to complete the circulation.

t is apparent that ornamental and use ful accessories may be provided for the housings, but as such features form no part of our present invention they have not been illustrated nor described in detail.

In using the improvements, the housings may as heretofore mentioned, be permanently mounted in a room in an apartment so as to form a separate alcove at one end of the room, that, when the bed is not in use, may

serve as a private alcove by curtains, (not shown) being draped from supports on the housings, if desired, in order to completely separate the alcove from the main compartment.

'When the structure is to be used as a bed, or bedroom, the major frame part is lowered on its hinged connection until its free edge rests on the front edge of the seat 5, the short bed section being then lowered to form locking relation with the main section and complete a bed frame. When the main frame is lowered, the U frame carried thereby brings the bed clothing down with the bed frame and mattress, so that the clothing may be folded toward the head of the bed and the frame pivoted back until it is out of the way. The bed then corresponds to an ordinary bedstructure and may be 4 used as such.

After the bed has been used it may be re turned to its inactive condition by releasing the bed frames from the seat 5, returning the U frame to position over the mattress, where it will clamp the bed clothing thereto, folding the clothing back over the frame, and turning the frame sections into the housings, where the bed parts will be completely concealed by the fronts of the housings, the clothing being suspended within the major housing and away from the mattress section, so that fresh air coming in through the lower grating will rise through the housing and circulate about the clothing to thoroughly air the same.

Having thus described our invent-ion, what we claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r l. A folding bed comprising housings spaced apart and provided with facing seats, and frame sections pivotally connected with the housings at the seat positions and adapt ed for support on said seats.
