Description

F. M. ROACH KITCHEN CABINET Ill Filed July 20. 1923 I :ZIIZZZZZZZZZZIIZ:
March 4 1924 Patented Mar. 4, i924 nears snares FRED nane UK M. EOACH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
' KITCHEN CARI Application died July so,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. ROAOH, acitizen of the United States, a resident of Detroit, county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Kitchen Cabinets, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like arts.
P This invention has reference to cabinets and relates particularly to kitchen cabinets adapted for use in small apartments, although it will be understood that it is susceptible of other uses.
One of the aims of my invention is to provide a combined cabinet and folding table adapted to be secured to the back of a door, such as a closet door for example, so as to swin into the closet to be concealed from view W on it is not used. Other advantages will appear in the specification when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure. 1 is a perspective view of my improved cabinet attached to a door, and
Fig. 2 is a central sectional elevation of the cabinet in closed position and showing phe door or table in open position by dotted mes.
Referring to the illustrative embodiment of my invention in the drawings, I have shown a rectangular cabinet 1 of suitable dimensions to fit on the back ofa door 2 and adapted to be removably secured thereto by suitable fastening means, such as the angle brackets 3 (Fig. 1). A horizontally swinging door or closure 4 is hinged to the front ed of the lower wall of the cabinet, prefera ly by spring hinges 5.
The inside of the door 4 may be lined or covered with enamelled or plain sheet metal 6 so as to provide a convenient table when it is swung down to a horizontal position as shown in Fi 2. A pairof swinging legs or supports are preferably pivotally mounted near the upper or free edge of the door (Fig. 2) by hinges 8 and are secured to swing together by a cross brace 9. These legs are designed to be folded against the front of the door in its closed osition and to swing outwardly therefrom, y gravity, when the door is opened and to rest upon the floor to support it rigidly in a horizontal plane. The interior of the cabinet is divided into me. Serial no. seem.
, The door may be provided with any suit able locking means, such as the latch 13 on the side wall of the cabinet, cooperating with a screw eye 14: in one edge of the door or closure 4 (see Fig. 1) to hold the door securely in closed position. It will be apparent that other forms of looks or latches may be employed.
In using my improved cabinet, after it is filled with the usual utensils, the closet or other door on which it is suspended is swung open to the desired position, and then the cabinet door 4 is unlatched and swung down to its horizontal position. The legs 7 remain vertical, due to gravity, and support the table without requiring any attention. The. wei ht of the door, when it is in its horizonta position, is suficient to overcome the strength of the springs in its hinges so that it will remain open. It is then read for service. The legs, resting upon the, 001:, will tend to resist movement of the door when the cabinet is being used.
Thus, it will be seen that my disappearing cabinet is not only handy and readily made available for use, but is designed to occupy a minimum of space and has a large storage capacity which constitutes a very important desideratum in connection with modern small apartments, such as a single room apartment wherein disappearing furniture is employed. Further, it may be manufac tured at a small cost andis easy to install.
Also, because the entire cabinet is supported above the floor, it is not easily accessible to mice and other pests.
. Obviously, my invention is not limited to.-'
the details of construction herein shown anddlelscribed but is susceptible of various 0 Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention without restricting myself thereto, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A cabinet comprising, in combination, a
box portion having a plurality of compartments therein, withv its back secured to the eww y from the door into supporting pogedly sit-ion when the door is open and tending 1 portion to swing downto resist swinging movement of the door wardly approximately to a horizontal While the cabi inside of a closet or other door, a combined Wardl table and closure for said cabinet hin mounted on the box y m d H e 0 m A .S 0 e M win 0 im i mmc E DVvS F 5 position and hlnged supporting means In testimon mounted adjacent the free end of said name to this closure to rest upon the floor, said supporting means being mounted to swing 01ft-
