UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. WARNER, NEW YORK, N. Y.
CASING FOR FOLDING BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,151, dated. January 1, 1901.
Application filed. August 20; 1900. Serial No. 27,429. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. WARNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casings for Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompany: in g drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved casing for folding beds; and one-object thereof are to provide a structure of this character which embodies an efficient means for'containing and concealing the bedding when the device is folded and a rigid shelf for holding ornaments, which shelf is not disturbed bythe operation of opening and closing the bed.
A further object is to provide an exceedingly durable and ornamental structure which takes up but little room when folded against the wall.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bed-casing, showing the same in folded position; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation taken on the line a: 00 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention the casing is made in the form of a plain rectangular bookcase, and it comprises the outer box A and the swinging inner framework B.
The outer box A embodies a base 1, end walls 2, a top shelf 3, and a back board 4, which is preferably supplied with openings 5. This box is composed of stout material, and it firmly rests in an upright position upon legs 6, whereby any ornaments placed upon the shelf 3 will not be disturbed by the operation of opening and folding the bed.
The inner framework B embodies, primarily, strong end walls 7, a bottom wall 8, and a This frame is hinged to the outer box by means of pivots, as O, or other suitable means, whereby it may be swung outwardly into horizontal position when desired. This said frame carries the mattress, as D, the supporting-spring E, the hinged side extensions F, and the general mechanism and arrangement of the interior parts of the bed; but I do not confine myself to any specific form of mattress, springs, extensible legs, and detailed means for supporting the parts, as my present invention relates only to the casing for a folding bed. Placed within the frame B and securely attached thereto is a partition B, which embodies the rectangular frame b, the strengthening-barb, which is extended horizontally across the center thereof, and the back embodying plates or boards 19 which cover the entire area of the partition and entirely obscure the bedding. This partition also acts as a means for supplying rigidity to the structure. A framework G is also placed within the frame B and extended across the front thereof. This framework preferably embodies a plurality of frames, as H, I, and J, and they each carry a sheet of preferably transparent glass, as K.
In the compartment between the partition B and the framework G, I place ornamental draperies of fabric or other suitable material L. These draperies are securely attached at the top and bottom by means of metallic rods M, and owing to the back board 19 of the frame B and the glass plates -'K they are entirely protected from dust or accidental contact with surrounding objects, whereby they are constantly maintained in a clean and fresh condition.
In use the device is normally in position, as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawings, when it is out of use as a bed. When it it is desired to use the bed, the frame B is swung into horizontal position in a manner common to folding beds, and it is obvious that this operation can be performed withoutdisturbing the said swinging frame comprising an outer four-walled frame,an inner four-walled frame, a partition thereon, a strengthening-brace,an inner auxiliary frame incasing a glass front and also fitting within the swinging frame, draperies between the two said inner frames of the swinging frame and parallel horizontal bars located respectively at top and bottom between the two frames of the said swinging frame and carrying the said draperies, Whereby the draperies are protected, substantially as shown and described.
2. As a bedstead, the combination with an outer upright frame embodying four walls and a back all rigidly attached to each other, of the swinging frame hinged to and fitting within the said upright frame, the said swinging frame comprising an outer four-Walled frame embodying the sides, head and foot boards of the bedstead, an inner four-walled frame which is securely attached within the swinging frame, a partition adapted for supporting springs, mattress and bedding, a strengthening-brace, an auxiliary framework incasing a glass front and also fitting within the swinging frame, and two horizontal rods located respectively at top and bottom, within the space between the frame carrying the partition and the framework incasing the glass, and draperies stretched upon the said rods, the draperies adapted for obscuring the partition, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventionI have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 16th day of August, 1900.
