WALDO R. FILLMORE AND ELMER BOILLOT, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
GOMPARTMENT-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WALDO R. FILLMORE and ELMER BoILLoT, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compartment-Beds; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to a compartment bed, and more particularly to a bed structure for use in small apartments, dormitories, or the like, wherein it is necessary or desirable for the bedroom to be used as a living room, or for other purposes; the principal object of the invention being to provide a folding bed structure comprising a housing having a seat upon which the bedframe may rest when extended.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a bed structure of this character which may occupy substantially the same space as an ordinary double bed, but comprises separate single bed-frames.
In accomplishing these objects we have provided improved details of structure; the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of acornpartment bed containing our improvements and illustrating a double housing, with the bed-frame of one housing concealed and the other lowered for use. Fig. II is a vertical section of the double housing, showing both of the bed-frames in lowered position, and particularly illustrating the space by which the individual beds are separated.
Referring more indetail to the parts :--1 designates spaced housings, that may be arranged along the opposite walls of a room or compartment, and are provided with facing seats 2 that are separated sufficiently to permit free movement therebetween, so that the space between the seats and housings may serve the purpose of an ordinary living or dining room.
Each of the housings 1 comprises an interior chamber 3, having a front opening 4, and, pivotally mounted on the housing, by
Copies of this patent may be obtained for hinges 4', or the like, is abed-frame 5,which, when not in use, is completely inclosed by the housing, but which may be drawn down to rest on the seat 2, as illustrated in the drawings, the back of the fram ebeing provided with a weight 7 and the free edge with a keeper-strip 8 which engages a crossbar 9 within the housing to limit the inward pivotal movement of the frame.
The bed-frame is arranged endwise in the housing so that when it is lowered onto the seat the side of the bed is directed into the room parallel with the seat and the housings are spaced so that when both of the frames are lowered, sufficient space is left therebetween for ready ingress or egress of the occupantsQ It is apparent that with this construction, each housing occupies but a limited space, as the projection of the bed-frame from the edge of the seat need be but a fraction of the width of the bed; the seat, however, forming sufficient support to prevent displacement of the frame or loosening of its pivotal connection with the housing.
It is also apparent that the double construction occupies but slightly greater space than an ordinary double bed, but that by having the frames pivoted longitudinally, they are, when let down from the housing, adaptable for use as entirely separate beds, so that joint occupants of the compartment may have the comfort and advantages of separate beds while utilizing the space required for but a single double bed of ordinary size.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A compartment bed comprising a housing having a front opening, a seat projecting from said housing and determining the lower edge of said opening, and a bed longitudinally hinged to and entirely supported on the longitudinal edge of said seat at the lower edge of said opening, and adapted to revolve on to said seat and be symmetrically supported thereby.
In testimony whereof we a'liiX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
