Be. it known that I, LARr N J. 'MnAn, a citizenjof the United States, a'nda resident of Aurora, in-the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets; andI do hereby declare that the. following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifi cation.

type of corset having the lacing in front and which is provided with a shield back of the lacing to bridge the open space ex-- posed by the lacing and confine and protect from protruding that part of the body or undergarment of the wearer which is covered by the lacing.

In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view representing my improved corset in place on the body of the wearer before the parts thereof have been adjusted to their final position. Fig. 2 is a view representing a partial transverse section through the front of the corset body and shield as it appears when all parts thereof are in their final position. Fig. 3 is aview in front elevation'of the shield of my improved corset. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the means for attaching the margins of the shield to the corset body.

Referring to that embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 5 indicates the corset body which opens in-front. Said body is provided adjacent one margin 5 with a stiffening strlp 6 provided with a vertical row of eyelets 6.

7 indicates a stiffening strip having eyelets 7, the same being connected with the stiffening strip 6 by means of a lacing 8 which passes through the eyelets 7 6 in such manner so that the space between the stiffening strips 6 and 7 may be adjusted to the desire and comfort of the wearer. , shield as awholei To" the frontface of the jfllateral marginal parts 12 12 are'secured The invention relates particularly to that netting 15 which is preferably located along the central or median line thereof and is secured by stitching at its lateral edges to the more flexible partof the shield. The shield is corded on both sides of the strip of netting 15, the said cording extending in closely spaced parallel vertical rows 16 which are stitched in pockets formed in the body of said shield 12. This construction provides 'a superior stiffening arrangement which prevents the protruding of the soft folds of the body through the lacing while at the same time obviating the discomfort to the wearer of the more rigid stiflening devices as whalebone or steel and the like a heretofore used. At the upper and lower margins of the shield 12 is secured binding tapes 17, 17, which assist in retaining the original shape of the shield and also preventing wear at the margins.

In the use of my-improved corset, the shield member is detachably secured in position to the stiffenin members 6 and 7 by means of the co-acting snap members 13 and 14. The shield member 12 is of a width greater than-the space between the stifi'ening members 6 and 7 and accommodates itself to the space between the same. After the shield member 12 is in place, the marginal arts of the corset bod ma be a ed by the hands and secur e d ir i the 11 82131- manner.

It is apparent that a corset made inaccordance with my invention has many advantages. The lacing may be adjusted in the usual manner and in making the shield member detachable from the corset body, will readily allow of laundrying, of said shield and replacing the same by a new one if so desired. In addition the corset may be used with or without the shield to suit the wearer.

I claim as my invention In a corset, in combination with a body opening in front and having a stiffening strip provided with eyelets at one margin, a second stiffening trip having eyelets spaced from said first mentioned stifi'ening strip, lacing connecting the eyelets of the first and second mentioned stiiiening' strips, coacting member of attaching devices carried respectively on said second mentioned stifiening strip and the other margin of said corset bodv, a shield member adapted to lie beneath the lacing and coacting devices placed; respectively on the margins of said shield and on said corset body for detach ably connecting the lateral margins of said shield to said stiffening members, said shield member having stifi'enin members of whalebone and the like ad]acent its lateral edges inside of the lines of the co-acting members of the attaching devices thereon and a centrally disposed non-rigid stifiening member consisting of a trip of netting having a plurality of closelyspaced parallel rows of cording arranged adjacent thereto.
