POST-ANCHOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 10,1914.
- Application filed December 30, 1012. Serial No. 739,413.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State oLOhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Anchors, of which the following is a specification.
The principal purpose and object of my invention is to provide an improved land anchor which is more sim 3k: in its construction, and better adapted for use in the anchoring of fence posts, telephone, and other similar posts, than other similar unchors now in use; and I accomplish this purpose by the means which are more particularly hereinafter set 't'orth.\
Referring to the drawings which are made a part here-oi": Figure 1 represents in perspective a general View of my invention; Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of Fig. 1 on the line A.-A; the same being shown as in position below the ground line (J--C, and the anchor rod suitably turned to enter the slot 2; and Fig. 3 represents a transverse section of Fig. 1 on the line B-B.
Coming now to a more detailed descrip tion of my invention: in general terms my invention comprises a cylindrical anchor hlodic 1, which is provided with a slot .2, which from preference extends longitudinally of said blOCiiZ, a reinforcing plate 3,
through which said slot 2 is made continuous, and which 15 provided with recesses -l-4-, which for manifest reasons are located opposite each other, one on each side of thc slot 3, and made to conncct thorowilh; and an anchor rod 5. hlanifcstly, the plale it might be made integral with the block l, the part i being made suitably heavy; but from preference, considering the strength and weight, 1 mountsaid plate upon the inner side of said block, and secure the same thereto by means of bolts or rivets (3. For the purpose of engaging said reccsscs -l----l, I provide said rod with side lugs, 7. Said anchor block ocing cylindrical, in tho practical use oli my invention. l, bore a hole in the ground to receive said anrhor. in order that my invention shall have its grcaiost value, it is intended that said rod shall he inserted through the native earth; and therefore, said lugs living ncccssarily placed near one of its ends. that end is suitably sharpened, and in consequence given a harpoon appearance. Said hole being first bored, it may now be understood from Fig. 2, that in order that said point shall be permitted to enter the slot 2, said rod must be suitably turned. In construction, it may now be stated, that said slot 2, and tho harpoon point 8, are (lo-adapted so that said point can enter said slot only when the rod is suitably turned; and so that when the same is givena quarter turn either way, said lugs may then he made to enter said recesses. In practical construction it may he understood, that, said hole being first bored, it is innnali'aial whether the anchor is then placed thcrcirnor the rod is n xt inserted. .lnt from practical experience l find it most convenient LO leave the anchor until the rod has lirst been inserted; thereby obviating any necessity for the use of special appliances for holding said anchor whilev the rod is lining inserted. But in either event, after said point has ."ieen made to enter said slot, and said rod is 'iven a quarter turn, by slightly withdrawing said rod and causing said lugs to enter said recesses, said rod cll'ectually locked, and
all tampering therewith is prevented. For the purpose of making conm-clion with the guy wire, not shown, the outer end of said rod is provided with a suitable eye 9.
In referring; to the drawings it may be noticed that in Fig. .2, which is a vertical section oi Fig. 1, that the anchor is set angling. it may now be explained that in said drawing. said anchor is supposed to be in position for actual usc, which according t th h -to oi' the soil requires that said hole shall he horcd, and consequently that said anchor shall he sci, with a more or les close approximation to that of a right angle to said guy wire.
.llaving now fully descrihcd what I claim as new, is:
In a land anchor an anchor block, a. reinforcing plate fixedly carried thereby, a slot passing through said block and plate, and duplicate locking recesses in said plate, one atoach side of said slot and connectin; therewith.
in testimony whcroo'l' i allix my signaturc in presence of two witnesses.
ii I LLl AM JOHNSON.
