Description

J. H. COOPER.-

BASE FOR FENCE POSTS.

Patented May 8, 1894.

v .1 w d B 7 UNITED STATES;-

PATENT OFFICE.

JOHN H. COOPER, OF MILFORD, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SAMUEL LAVERING, OF FAIRBURY, ILLINOIS.

BASE FOR FENCE-POSTS.

SPEGIFICATIONforming part of LettersPatent No. 519,445, dated May 8, 1894.

Application filed December 22, 1893. Serial No. 494,375- (NO mode To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. COOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, 1n the county of Kosciusko and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bases for Fence-Posts; and I do declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked :hereon, which form a part of this specificaion.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in base portions for fence posts, and I aim to produce an invention of this character, which shall be, by its construction, more durable and substantial than bases designed for a similar purpose.

.- To attain these advantages I construct my base so as to allow any water which is likely to drain into the sockets, to readily pass through, and not accumulate, as would he the case in a single socket with no outlet for drainage. I further provide openwork to the flanges of the metallic base for the purpose of lessening the weight of the same, which openings form a more substantial anchorage to the base.

My invention consists further in the novel construction, combination and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

I fully illustrate my invention in the annexed drawings, which with the letters of reference attached thereto. form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicat ing like parts throughout the scveral'views, in which- 1 Figure 1, is a sectional view of a section of a fence with posts set in the ground. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the base for posts; Fig. 3 a longitudinal section on the line w, w of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a transverse sectional View of socket.

Reference now being had to the'details of the drawings by letter, A, designates any ordinary fence post designed to be held in a base portion.

B is the base portion which is cast in one piece from any suitable metal and provided with, preferably four flanges b, b, &c., each of which is provided with the open work as shown at b, b, which are designed to more firmly anchor the base when driven in to the ground, by the dirt or clay accumulating in the said openings, and also the base is not as liable to be heaved when in extremely cold weather, the soil becomes frozen, as the expansion is distributed equally in different directions.

D, D, are cylinders or rings cast integral with the base portion and are adapted to receive the post, and by this construction it will be readily seen that the water running down the body of the post will readily drain through the said open sockets or rings thus avoiding an accumulation of water in a socket of a post base, which when frozen would quite likely render worthless the whole base.

01, is a groove longitudinally of the length of one of the cylinders D, which is provided to lock the said post to the socket, by means of a ke Oil the edges of the wings of a part or all of the flanges I provide the heading E, which serves to retain the base in the soil more firmly. The lower ends of the flanges are pointed as shown to more readily drive into the ground.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A fence post base having flanges at right angles to each other provided with open work as described, two collars integral with the said flanges for the reception of the post, the slot 01 to receive a key to lock the post to the collar, and the rounded beads on the edges of the flanges, all as and for the purposes set forth.

In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

JOHN H. COOPER.

Witnesses:

THEODORE O. RUSK, SAMUEL LAVERING.
