SAFETY-GUARD FOR RAZORS.
To all rein/1a it may com-era Be it known that I, Louis \V. Fa'eorfinn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Guards for Razors, o't which the tollowing is a specification.
My present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in safety razors, and resides more especially in an improved attachable and adjustable guard designed to be removably and reversibly attached to the ordinary or commercial forms of razor blades now upon the market.
The objects of the invention are to provide a safety guard 01'' the character stated that is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, etlective in operation and one that may be easily and quickly attached to any ordinary razor blade whether said blade be heavy or light, bread or narrow, and that may be adjusted with relation to the cutting edge ot the blade in order to give the latter varying degrees of safety in shaving according to closen of shave desired.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a guard that may be reversibly attached to a razor blade in order to permit shaving with either side of the blade as desired, thus making the guard equally serviceable for use by either right or left handed persons.
Briefly and specifically stated the invention comprises an attachable and adjustable guard for razor blades termed from a single strip or blank of sheet metal having a central portion of reduced width, said strip or blank being bent intermediate its ends to povide a stucture of substantially U-t'orln. the opposed members of which are adapted to embrace the opposite :t'aces oi a razor blade and one of said members being wider than the other and provided with comb-like teeth at its lower edge, and adjustable means extending through the bent and contracted portion of the said blank tor bringing the opposed members into clamping engagement with the opposite faces of a razor blade.
The invention resides further in the teatures of construction and combination and arrangement of parts herein shown and described and then more definitely pointed out in the claim.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to understand, make and use my said invention, I will. now proceed to describe the Specification of Letters Patent.

My improved razor guard is made from a relatively thin and resilient sheet metal blank A having substantially the outline as illustrated in Fig. 41-, ot tl accompanying drawing, and comprises the two blade-engaging members 1 and 2, connected together intermediate their edges by a relatively narrow or contracted neck 3, formed integral with said members 1 and 9.
The blade- engaging members 1 and 2, are preferably made of equal length, but the member 1 is slightly wider than the member 2, and said member 1 is provided with comb-like teeth 4-, along its longitudinal or outer edge, said teeth being curved outwardly as shown in Fig. 3.
The neck or contracted portion $1 of the blank A is bent intermediate its ends as more clearly illustrated at 5, in Fig. 8, to provide a. substantially though-like or U-shaped structure, and the blade engaging members 1 and 2 are bent in\ 'ardly toward each other as shown in Fig. 3, to provide a space between them conlorniin somewhat to the eross-sectimial shape ot a razor blade and also to bring the blade-engaging member 2 directly opposite and substantially parallel with the plain or untoothed portion of the member 1, to enable these members to be brought into clamping engagement with the opposite tacos ot a razor-bhule (1, as more clearly illustrated in Figs. 1., 2 and 3 ol the accompanying drawing.
The bent portion 7) of the neck 3 of the guard is preterably arched or partially cylindrical and constitutes a resilient conneeiion between the two bhnleengaging members that serves to normally urge the said members apart or away trom each other when the clamping means, hereinafter to be described is released, thus enabling the razor blade to be easily and quickly inserted between said members.
The clamping means reterred to consists, in the instance shown, of a pin or bolt 7,
held at one end, against turning movement, to that portion of the neck 3, adjacent the blade-engaging member 2, and having its opposite end extending freely through an opening 8, formed in that portion of the neck adjacent the blade-engaging member 1, the said pin or bolt being threaded as at 9, throughout substantially its length. In the present embodiment of the invention the pin or bolt 7, is shown as provided, at its head end, with an angular portion 10, designed to enter a correspondingly shaped opening 12, in neck 3, as more clearly shown in Fig. This construction prevents the bolt 0r pin 7 from turning relative to the guard, and at the same time enables the pin to be easily and quickly removed for the purposes of cleaning all parts of the guard. Obviously the pin or bolt may be secured to the guard in any other suitable way so as to prevent a relative turning movement between the parts. Threaded upon the pin or bolt 7, is a thumb-nut 13, one end of which is adapted to bear against the outer face of the neck 8, adjacent the bent portion 5 thereof, and which serves when screwed home upon its bolt or pin to draw the blade engaging members 1 and 2 of the guard, into clamping engagement with the razor blade 6, and when unscrewed to free the guard from the blade.
As will be seen by referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing the blade-engaging members 1 and 2, are relatively long and narrow and in practice I propose to make them narrower than the width of the razor blade to which they are to be attached so that no portion thereof, except the contracted connecting neck will project beyond the back or upper edge of the blade, and so far as the neck is concerned, this will project only at about the center of the back of the blade. The object of this construction is to obviate, as far as possible any projections or extensions from the back of the razor blade such as will, if present, make it difficult for the person shaving to shave the upper lip under the nose, or around the corners of the mouth, or around the ears. My improved construction of guard does not increase the width of the razor-blade at either end thereof nor does it offer any projection to that side of the blade that is to contact with the face of the person using the same, hence the blade may be brought into substantial flat contact with the face in order to effect a close shave.
Inasmuch as only one clamping screw is employed the guard may be easily and quickly applied to any ordinary razor-blade, as will be obvious from the foregoing descriptions taken in connection withthe accompanying drawing, and may be applied with its comb-like or toothed edge in contact with either face of the blade so that the same may be used by either a right or a left handed person.
lVhile 1 herein show and describe what- I now consider to be a preferred embodiment of the invention, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise details of construction illustrated except as I may be limited by the terms of the appended claim, as I am aware that slight variations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I prefer to provide the opposite vertical edges of the blade-engaging member 1, of the guard with guide-lines or notches 1.4, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, in order to assist in properly and accurately adjusting and setting the cutting edge of the razor-blade 6, with relation to the toothed or comb-like edge of the guard.
What I claim is An attachable and adjustable guard for razor-blades made of a single piece of thin resilient sheet-metal cut into a blank to form two parallel blade-engaging plates integrally connected intermediate their ends by a narrow neck arranged at right angles to said plates, one of said plates being wider than the other and provided with teeth at its outer edge, said neck being bent centrally into a loop to bring the plates into substantial parallelism whereby they will lie throughout their whole extent snugly against opposite sides of a razor blade below the back and from too to heel thereof, with the said narrow neck projecting from the central portion only of the blade, a single non-rotatable bolt extending through both ends of said bent neck between the said loop and the points of connection of the neck with the plates, and a thumb-screw threaded upon the bolt for bringing the plates into clamping engagement with opposite faces of the razor blade.
