To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that I, CHARLES H. OCUM- PAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Razors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in razors, of the safety type. Heretofore with razors of this character, it was necessary to adjust the parts, to obtain. a coarse shave as is customary the first time over, and then again adjust the parts before going over the second time in order to This in many instances amounted to guessing, in determining whether or not the parts were properly set to secure the desired result.

According to my present invention, I provide two guards, each being arranged in different relative positions with regard to the edge of the blade, so that with one adjustment, with one side of the razor a coarse shave can be obtained, while with the other, a close shave may be secured. And what is of great importance is that when shaving one can always tell which edge is the one he has been using.

I also provide as part of my invention blade of new construction which overcomes many of theobjections heretofore offered against flat blades.

The invention further comprehends improvements in the specific details of construction and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter referred to and particularly pointed out in the claims. 5

In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same, the parts being separated. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a slightly different form of the invention, the partsbeing separated and include a modification of the blade. Fig. 5 is a still further modification of the blade. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of guard.

Referring particularly to Figs. 1, 2, and 3,

1 indicates a combined holder and guard provided with a convex upper surface 2; a handle 3; and a central perforation 4, extending from the convex surface through and into the handle. The guard portion of the holder 1, is formed with a series of outwardly extended teeth 5, along one edge, to cooperate with a cutting blade 6. The cutting blade 6, is preferably formed from a thin sheet of metal of uniform thickness, and is permanently held curved in cross section either by means of a flange 6 struck up from the blade as shown in Fig. 3, or by doubling the metal back in itself as 6 in Fig. 5, or if desired by using separate stiffening means shown as 14 in Fig. 4. The upper guard, or clamping member 8, is curved in cross section, and is formed on one edge only with a series of outwardly projecting teeth 9, and a depending threaded rod.10. The teeth 9 at the ends of the clamping member may be bent downwardly to position the blade on the combined holder and guard 1. Or the flange 6 on the blade 6 may be used as positioning means for the blade when the blade is placed on the holder. In assembling this form of my invention, the blade 6, is placed on the concave surface 8 of the combined clamping member and guard in the manner usual in razors of this type. The rod 10, of the clamping member or guard 8, being passed through the blade perforation], and into the opening 4, and engages the threaded portion of a locking member 11 of the handle 3, which when operated draws the parts together, hence securely binding the cutting blade between the clamp and holder. When so assembled it will be observed the teeth 5, are below the cutting edge of one side of the blade, while the teeth 9 are on top of the opposite edge of said blade. This arrangement of the guard teeth, furnishes a razor which with out adjustment will enable a person to'go over his face and obtain either a coarse or .close shave as maybe desired, depending on struction shown in'Figs. 1, 2, and 3, as it will be obvious many minor changes may be made without departingfrom the spirit of the improvement. For instance in m copending application Serial No. 413,6 2, I show a razor blade having a permanent cross sectional curvature, formed by embossings, which cooperate with positioning lugs on the holder. r

In Fig. 4, I have shown a cutting blade 13, having end stiffening lugs 14: and in this case perforations 13 whlch cooperate with the lugs or bosses 15 on the holder. The

holder is formed on but one edge with the guard teeth, so also is the clamp, these teeth however, being arranged to extend in opposite direction as before described.

In lieu of the screw and handle connected as shown in Figs. '1 and 4:, I may employ a lock indicated at 17, in Figs. 4 and 6, which is essentially the same as that shown in the before mentioned application.

In place of either set of the guard teeth, I may use a plain bar 18, indicated in Fig. 6, and is of the type shown in the copending application referred to, the only diiferencebeing, that in the present invention it is on but one side of the holder.

Broadly stated this invention comprehends a single guard provided with means on one edge to cooperate with the blade at the top, and a single guard having means opposite tothe means on the top guard to cooperate with the opposite edge of said blade, for the sole purpose of enabling a person to shave either close, or coarse, without the tedious and annoying adjusting of parts. And it also enables the person to know definitely which edge of the blade he is supposed to be shaving with, overcoming .the confusion incident to the ordinary double guard razor heretofore on the market, when the razor is momentarily lain down.

The invention also comprehends a rigid blade of sheet metal, having its rigidity maintained by increasing the thickness of the two ends of the blade, thus leaving the remainder of the blade free from the embossing, etc., as in my copending application No, 413,989.

I am aware that I have shown in a copending application Serial #410,989 a razor blade h extending at right angles to the cutting edge aving an integral flange at its end for stiffening the blade, but this particular feature I did not claim in said copending application having reserved it for this application.
