To all t0/rom t may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN Ro'rI-IEN- BURG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roxbury, Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Binders, of which the following is a specilication.

This invention relates to binders, and particularly to memorandum o-rder binders of that kind adapted for binding a pad of order sheets or the like between book covers, the invention being directed particularly to a head clamp for engagement with the head or stub portion of the pad for removably clamping the pad in position, while permitting of the attachment of the individual sheets.

The object of the invention is to provide a head clamp of the character described which permits of a pad being slidably applied and firmly clamped in position, and the pad being subsequently removed when the original sheets are exhausted, for the application of a new pad, and which is designed to firmly clamp the stub of the pad in such manner as to enable the head piece to be riveted or otherwise fastened in position upon the back cover without detracting from its clamping action.

rlhe invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view of an order book embodying my invention, showing the front cover of the book thrown back and a pad clamped in position. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3--3 of F ig. 1. Fig. 1- is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3 on an enlarged scale, illustrating more clearly the construction and clamping action. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the head clamp removed.

Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the front and 2 the rear cover of a book or binder of the character described, and 3 a pad of order or other blanks having a stub portion et. its usual, in this class of devices the individual sheets are adapted to be supported from their individual stubs along perforate or weakened lines 5, and the stub portions are united by staples or by fastening devices 6 to hold the sheets assembled in Specification of Letters Patent.

pad form. The pad may be a memorandum pad, order blank pad or any similar pad, and consists of any desired arrangement, when preferred, of original and duplicate blanks.

A head clamp 7 is provided for holding the pad between the covers of the book. This clamp is made of spring sheet metal, and is of inverted U-form in cross section, and comprises an upper wall or bridge portion 8 and front and rear walls 9 and 10. The rearwall 10 is perforated on opposite sides of its transverse center to receive rivets or equivalent fastenings 11, whereby the clamp is fastened to the back cover 2 of the binder or book.

The stub portion -1 of the pad is adapted to be received in the space between the walls 9 and 10 of the clamp and to be slidably inserted and removed from either end of the clamp, by which means when a pad is fully used, the remainder of the pad may be detached from the book and a new pad substituted in its place. rlhe lower edges of the walls 9 and 10 are bent inwardly and downwardly at an angle to provide clamping edges 1:2 and 13 to bear upon the front and rear portions of the stub 4 at a point above the weakened lines 5, thus enabling the pad to be firmly clamped in position, while permitting the individual sheets, thereof to be removed at will.

It will be observed that the walls 9 and 10 are arranged at somewhat greater angles than a right angle to the top or bridge piece 8, and are relatively divergent toward the free or clamping edges 12 and 13. The wall 10 is disposed at a somewhat less angle to the bridge piece S than the wall 9, allowing the latter to lie clear of the stub 1, to permit the heads of the rivets to be received without coming in contact with the stub 4. or interfering with the insertion or removal of a pad, while the wall 9 and its edge 12 have bearing contact with the pad. To compensate for this outward projection of the wall 10, the bearing edge 13 of said wall is made relatively deeper and set at a greater angle of inclination than the bearing edge 12 of the wall 9, thus providing a sutlicient amount of free metal below the lines of the rivets 11 to adapt the edge 13 to have a reliable and efficient clamping action in holding the pad pressed against the wall 9 as well as against the edge 12.

.lts above described, the pad may be inserted or removed by sliding it longitudinally into position from either end of the head clamp. Then the pad is so inserted or removed it is desirable to provide for a relative outward yielding motion of the wall 9 with respect to the wall 10, in order that the clamping member may bind the inserted pad with ample force, and yet yield sufiiciently to permit of the insertion of pads varying to some extent in thickness. By the construction described it is evident that the pad may be inserted or removed at a sufficient angle to press the wall 9 away from the wall 10, since the stub portion 4 is permitted, by the offset or angular position of the wall l0, to have a second degree of movement backward to secure the action described. Provision is thus made for the lisertion and removal of blanks without injury thereto, and for a reliable and eliicient clamping action to be obtained, whereby accidentai downward displacement of the pad between the engaging edges l2 and 13 will be efectually prevented at all times in service.

I claim l. The combination, in a binder, of a pad clamp comprising a substantially U-shaped clamping member fixed at its rear wall to the binder, said clamping member having its opposed walls divergent with respect to the remaining wall toward their free edges, and having the latter bent inward convergently to provide clamping surfaces, said opposed walls being disposed at different relative angles to the said remaining wall.

The combination, with a binder, of U-shaped spring clamping member, iixed a its rear wall to the binder, said clampin member having its front and rear walls eX# tending at an angle divergently toward their free edges, the rear wall being arranged at al greater angle than the iront wall, and said walls having their free edges bent at an inward and downward angle, the free edge of the rear wall being of greater depth and lying at a greater angle than the free edge of the front wall.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a clamping member of the character described comprising a channeled or U-shaped body made of spring metal, and having its front and rear walls arranged at angies greater than right angle to its cross portion, said walls having their Jfree edges bent inwardly and downwardly at an angle to provide clamping portions, the rear wall being arranged at a greater angle than the front wall and having a clamping portion of relatively greater depth and inclination.
