Description

WILLIAM ROY HOTGI-IKI SS, OIEYSTQ PAUL, MINNESOTA.
REMOVABLE BOOK-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, 1917.
Application filed October 12, 1916. Serial No. 125,206.
' To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, WILLIAM Roy HoTcH- Kiss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented an Improvement in Removable Book-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in binders, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified, for permit ting fillers to be inserted or removed in a minimum of time with a minimum of efi'ort, and wherein the filler will be held firmly in place against the possibility of accidental displacement, when inserted.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the binder with a filler in place.
Fig. 2 is a partial edge view.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the filler separated from the binder.
In the present embodiment of the invention the binder or cover consists of a front 1 and a back 2, which are connected by a flexible hinge member 3 in the usual manner. A plate 4 of thin steel or the like is secured to the inner face of the back, near the hinge connection, by means of rivets 5 or the like, and the said plate has a tongue 6 at the center of that side edge adjacent to the hinge, the said tongue being separated from the plate by slits or cuts 7, at each side of the tongue.
These slits or cuts 7 extend approximately one-half the width of the plate, and the tongue throughout its extent is free from the cover, the plate on the outer side of each slit being, however, attached to the cover by a rivet, as shown. At each end and adjacent to the hinge 3 the plate has an upturned flange 8, and at the outer side of each slit 7 at the side edge adjacent to the hinge the plate is provided with another flange 9.
The filler, indicated at 10, which may be of any usual or desired construction, having the supporting back 11 of card board or the like, is provided with a tongue 12 of card board or paper of suiiicient strength, and this tongue is adapted to be inserted behind the spring tongue 6 of the plate 4. In order to insert a filler, the free end of the tongue 12 is inserted beneath the spring tongue 6, and it will be noticed that the side edges of the tongue 12 are beveled to facilitate the entrance of the tongue. The spring tongue 6 'is now lifted suiiiciently to permit the bound end of the filler to drop into position between the flanges 8 and 9, and the operation of inserting is complete. To remove the filler the procedure is reversed.
It will be obvious that the improved binder may be of any desired shape and size, to accommodate any preferred size of filler. The fillers are easily and quickly inserted or removed, and they cannot become accidentally displaced when they are once seated within the flanges 8 and 9.
It will be observed that there are no screws, nuts, bolts, fastenings or projections of other kinds extending out from the filler when it is attached to the cover. The cover may lie flat and level on a smooth surface, producing an improved appearance whether the book is open or closed, and the spring tongue 6 is of just the right length to fit snugly to the back of the card board tongue 12. Thus when the filler is in place itis held firmly to the flanges 9 and cannot shift or slide from its proper position.
I claim:
1. A binder comprising a front and a back cover and a flexible connection between the same, and a plate secured to the inner face of the back adjacent to the hinge connection, said plate having a resilient tongue intermediate its ends at the edge adjacent to the hinge connection and extending toward the said hinge connection, and having holding flanges at each side of'the tongue at the said edge and at its ends adjacent to the first-named flange for engaging the bound end of a filler.
' 2. A binder comprising covers and the flexible connection between the same, a plate secured to the inner face of one cover adjacent to the hinged connection andvhaving a resilient tongue at the edge adjacent to the hinge connection and extending toward the same, the plate having flanges for engaging the sides and end of a filler.
8. A binder comprising covers and the flexible connection between the same, a plate secured to the inner face of one cover adjacent to the hinged connection and having a resilient tongue intermediate its ends at the edge adjacent to the hinge connection and extending toward the same.
4. A binder comprising a cover having secured to the inner face of one portion thereof a resilient tongue extending inward to- Ward the hinge of the cover and having on With a resilient integral tongue extending thesaid portion at the hinged connection toward the hinge of the cover at approxiupwardly extending flanges for engaging mately the center of the plate.
the end and sides of a filler. WILLIAM ROY HOTCHKISS.
'5. A binder comprising a cover having Witnesses:
secured to the inner face of one portion J. R. SoHUKNEoHT,
thereof a plate, the plate being provided G. O. JOHNSON.
