SEPARABLE uoun'rmc FOR MEMORANDA was Filed March 25, 194B INVENTOR. lzw W mm 727 Patented Oct. 17, 1950 UNITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE sEP aABLE MOUNTING FOR -1vrEMo RANDA PADS Lew W, Hamilton, Chicago, Ill.
' Application March 25, 1948, Serial No. 16,996
This invention relates to a separable mounting for memoranda pads and the like.
Certain known mountings for memoranda pads of this general character are objectionable in that they do not adequately secure the pads to the holder members or, in their constructions, require a' plurality-of parts, which increases the cost of fabrication of the same. Accordingly, it is an object of my invention to provide a separable mounting for memoranda pads or the like which is highly efficient in operation and which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture. With these ends in view, I have devised a novel separable mounting for memoranda pads and the like of which the following. description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, reference characters being used to designate the several parts.
Other aims,.objects and purposes of my invention will become apparent as the disclosure proceeds.
In the'drawings:
Fig.-1 is a plan view ofa memoranda pad and mounting illustrating the application of the invention. I I
Fig. 2 is a similar. fragmentary view on an larged scale with the sheets of the pad removed and showing the elements in assembled relation.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front perspective view of the supporting member of my separable mount- Fig. 4 is a fragmentary rear perspective view of a memoranda pad showing a cooperating element of the mounting attached thereto.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a supporting member which is formed of suitable material such as cardboard, fiber board, or plastic. It is contemplated that the member 5 'will carry on its surface suitable advertising indicia or printed matter. The member 5 is die-cut, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3, to provide two spaced parallel slits 6 and I and a cut-out portion 8,
' preferably rectangular in shape, connected with each slit at the top portion thereof. The cutout portions 8, 8 are arranged with their lower edges 9 and II in alignment and at right angles to the slits 6 and I and, in effect, form, with the longitudinal slits 6 and I, inverted L-shaped slits, the said lower edges serving as shoulders to support the cooperating element of the mounting, hereinafter to be described. As will be apparent, the portion I3 of the member 5 located between 4 claims. (01. 281-19) 2 capable of being bowed or displaced rearwardly, out of the plane of the member ,5.
The cooperating element I2 of the mounting is shown more clearly in Fig. 4 and comprises a backing or supporting member I4 formed of suitable cardboard material and is, preferably, coextensive in area with the memoranda pad I6 comprising a plurality of sheets of paper. The member I l may be attached to the pad I6 in any well known manner, as by staples or glue, the glue being applied along the top edge thereof. The member I4 is die-cut, as shown, along lines I'I, I8 and I9, with the lines El and I9 converging towards each other to provide a tapered tongue 2 I, which is displaceable out of the plane of the member I 4, the tongue being of greater width than the portion l3 between the slits 6 and I. It will be observed that the die-cut lines I I and I9 begin at points 23 and 24 respectively, which are spaced from the top and side marginal edges of the member I4, and that the tongue 2| is hinged along a line connecting these two points.
While the member M has been described as being preferably coextensive in area with the memoranda pad IE, it will be understood that the member I4 may be smaller in area than the pad I6, or may comprise only the tongue portion 2|, having shoulders extending from the points 23 and 24 to the marginal side edges and substantially parallel to the top edge of the pad I6. A backing member M coextensive in area with the pad I6, however, is preferred, since it facilitates production of the pad in that the said member is cut to size simultaneously with the pad of paper, and also because uniform thickness throughout the area of the pad is obtained, thereby permitting even stacking of the pads in storage.
the slits B and I is sufiiciently flexible as to be To mount the pad I6 on the member 5, the tongue 2I is pushed out of the plane of the member Land the end of the tongue 2! inserted in the cut out portions 8, B, the portion I3 of the member 5 being thereby displaced rearwardly out of the plane of the member to permit the tongue 2! to enter between the portion l3 and the portions 26 and 2? of the member 5 adjacent thereto. The tongue 2| is thus confined on its rearward side by the portion I3 and on its forward side by the portions 26 and 21. These portions together cooperate to frictionally retain the tongue 2| substantially in fiat condition contiguous to the plane of the member 5. When the elements of the mounting are properly assembled, the points 23 and 24 of the member 5 abut the lower edges 9 and II of the cut-out portions 6 and 1 respectively, which edges act as shoulders, thereby limiting the depth of insertion of the tongue 2| into the receiving pocket thus formed.
When all of the sheets of the memoranda pad l6 have been exhausted, the member I4 is moved upwardly to disengage the tongue 2| from its receiving pocket, and a new pad is thereafter inserted therein. Thus, a considerable economy in production and use is effected, since a supporting member such as 5, which may usually bear advertising indicia, may be reused indefinitely, it being only necessary to replace the memoranda pads [6 when the same have been exhausted.
While the invention has been described with relation to its application to memoranda pads, it will be understood that the sheets of the pads may carry printed matter, and the pads, for example, may be in the form of calendar pads which may be replaced when required.
I claim:
1. A separable mounting for memoranda pads comprising a supporting member slit along two spaced lines to provide a strip connected at both ends thereof, but displaceable for the greater part of its length out of the plane of said member and a cut-out portion on each side of said strip immediately adjacent thereto, and a member attachable to a pad and having a tongue of greater width than said strip, said tongue being insertable in said cut-out portions and receivable longitudinally in the slits forwardly of said strip.
2. In combination a supporting member slit along tWo spaced lines to provide a strip connected at both ends thereof, but displaceable for the greater part of its length out of the plane of said member and a cut-out portion on each side of said strip extending transversely thereof, and a member attachable to a pad and having a tongue of greater width than said strip, said tongue being insertable in said cut-out portions and receivable longitudinally in said slitted lines forwardly of said strip.
3. A separable mounting for memoranda pads and the like comprising a supporting member 4 slit along two spaced lines to provide a strip connected at both ends thereof but displaceable for the greater part of its length out of the plane of said member, said member having a cut-out portion on each side of said strip immediately adjacent thereto with the lower edge of each cut-out portion forming a supporting shoulder, and a backing member attachable to .a pad and having formed therein a tongue hinged at one end, said tongue when displaced out of the plane of said backing member forming a shoulder along the juncture thereof with said backing member, said tongue being so constructed and arranged as to be receivable in said cut-out portions and said slits forwardly of said strip with said shoulders cooperating to support said pad and said backing member on said supporting member.
4. In combination a supporting member slit along two spaced vertical lines to provide a strip connected at both ends thereof but displaceable for the greater part of its length out of the plane of said member, said member having a cut-out portion on each side of said strip immediately adjacent thereto and extending transversely thereof with the lower edge of each cut-out portion forming a supporting shoulder, and a backing member attachable to ,a, pad and having formed therein a tongue hinged at one end, said tongue when displaced out of the plane of said backing member forming a shoulder along the juncture thereof with said backing member, said tongue being so constructed and arranged as to be receivable in said cut-out portions and said slits forwardly of said strip with said shoulders cooperating to support said pad and said backing member on said supporting member.
