FAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2%, 1914i.
Application filed. July 31, 1913. Serial No. 782,235.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK *WoJoIoKI, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to fans, and the primary object of my invention is to provide an ornamental fan representing a large butterfly having wings, the fan being constructed whereby the wings can be oscillated to pro duce a current of air.
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive fanning device that can be readily held in the hand and operated to place air in motion in proximity to a persons head.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure l is a front elevation of a fan in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the mechanism of the fan, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the fan partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of a portion of the fan, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the fan.
A fan in accordance with this invention comprises a stick 1 having the sides cut away, as at 2. Secured to the front and rear sides of the stick 1, adjacent to the cut away sides thereof, are bearing plates 3 and pivot ally mounted between said bearing plates by pins 4- are arms 5 having the inner ends thereof terminating in curved handles (3. Interposed between the handles 6 and the stick 1 are flat compression springs 7 that have the ends thereof anchored in said stick and in said arms, whereby said springs cannot become accidentally displaced. The cut away sides of the stick 1 provide clearance for said springs, whereby the arms 5 can be rocked relatively to the stick 1 by squeezing and then releasing the handles 6.
Secured to the front side of the stick 1, at the outer end thereof, is a bow spring 8 and riveted or otherwise connected to said spring, as at 9 is a cross head 10. The ends of the cross head are provided with vertically alinmg apertured lugs 11 and pivotally mounted between said lugs by pins 12 are double cranks 13. One end of each crank is connected, as at 14 to the top of one of the arms 5 and the other end of said crank supports a blade 15 that is wing-sluiped in plan.
Shredded tissue-paper 16 or other mate rial can be secured to the stick to represent the body of a butterfly or insect, also to con ceal the mechanism at the outer end of the stick, whereby the fan will present a neat appearance.
It is apparent that when the arms 5 are rocked the blades or wings 15 are oscillated, said blades or wings moving in unison. to produce a current of air.
One embodiment of the invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
hat I claim is 1. A. fan comprising a stick, bearing plates carried thereby, arms pivotally mounted. between said bearing plates, a bow spring carried by the outer end of said stick, a cross head connected to said how spring, cranks carried by said cross head and connected to the outer ends of said arms, and blades carried by said cranks.
2. A fan comprising a stick, bearing plates carried thereby, arms pivotally mounted be tween said bearing plates, a bow spring carried by the outer end of said stick, a cross head connected to said how spring, cranks carried by said cross head and connected to the outer ends of said arms, blades carried by said cranks, compression springs interposed betwecn the inner ends of said arms and said stick, and a body carried by the outer end of said stick.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK VVOJCICKI.
Witnesses Josnrn RozMAN, THOMAS Kosiovowsni.
