Be it knownthat we. JoHN F. REYNOLDS, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angelesfitate of California, and ALBERT P. lVoRrHINGToN, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, both citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification. 7
Our invention relates to toys and particularly to an improved form of rolling toy. Our invention comprises a hoop which may be rolled along the sidewalk or other surface, a rotative device being mounted within the hoop and adapted to be rotated in a direction at right angles to that of the hoop while the latter is in motion. In the preferred form of our improved device the hoop carries a transverse frame extending'on opposite sides of the same in which is rotatably mounted a shaft which extends axially of the hoop. A pin extends'forwardly from this shaft and on this pin is rotatably mounted a form of windmill or Whirligig device. Extending rearwardly from the shaft is a curved blade which acts as a counter balance for the windmill device. When the hoop is rolled in a forward direction the air pressure on the rearwarly extending curved blade serves to maintain the windmill device in approximately a vertical plane at right angles to the direction of movement of the hoop. The windmill device is provided with radially extending blades which are angle larly disposed in the nature of propeller blades so that the pressure of the air on the same, as the hoop is rolling, will cause the device to rotate about its own axis.
In order that a clearer understanding of our invention may be had attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and illus trating one form of our invent-ion. In the drawings Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of the improved toy, Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 3 and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the toy, partly shown in section.
Referring to the drawings the device comprises a hoop 1 which is suitably formed of wood and is of desired size. A transverse frame is provided, this preferably consistingof a pair of metal bands 2, 2 which are curved so as to'extend outwardly in approximately semi-cylindrical form on each side of the hoop, the ends of the bands 2, 2 being secured to opposite faces of hoop 1, by screws or other suitable securing devices, as 1s shown at 3.
A shaft 4 extends transversely of the hoop and is rotatably mounted in the frame 2, 2. Preferably this shaft is mounted in the axis of the hoop and is suitably supported bv means of pins 5, which extend inwardl v through the metal frame members 2, 2, into suitable openings which are formed axiallv in the end portions of shaft 4-. i
The windmill or Whirligig device 6 is rotatably mounted on a pin 7 which extends forwardly from shaft 4. The curved counter balance blade 8 extends rearwardlv from shaft 4-. Preferably blade 8 is secured in position by providing the, same with a forwardly extending tongue 9 which is bent up in an inverted U-shape at the forward side of shaft i and is bent around the under side of the shaft, the pin 7 extending entirely through shaft 4 so that it will pierce two thicknesses of tongue 9 at the front side of shaft 4-. and one thickness of the same at the rear shaft 4 as is indicated in Fig. 2.
Preferably the windmill device 6 is provided with a. rearwardly extending loop or bail 10 through which pin 7 extends. The
windmill device 6 has a. central body portion 11 from which the blades 12 extend, this central portion 11 being substantially flat. The pin T exteni'ls through portion 11 of the rotative device as well as the loop 10, the head of the pin being in front of the portion ll of the device, the latter having according! a two-point hearing on the pin.
The device 6 is suitably formed of thin sheet metal with the arms or blades 12 extending radially. The blades 12 are bent or curved like propeller blades, the blades, therefore, having forward lateral edges 13 from which the blades slant rearwardly, to their rear lateral edges. Accordingly, suflicient pressure of air against the front of the device 6 will cause the same to rotate about its axis.
The hoop may be rolled in any suitable way as by the aid of a short stick or the hand applied to the outer edge of the hoop. When the hoop is rolled forwardly, that is towards the left. referring to Fig. 2, the air pressure against the curved counter balance blade 8 will serve to maintain the windmill devices 6 in an approximately vertical position at right angles to the direction of motion of the hoop. Air pressure will be developed against the front surfaces of the blades 12 by the motion of the hoop and this will cause rotation of the device 6 about pin 7 as an axis whenever the hoop is rolled with sufficient rapidity.
It will be noted that the frame 2 provides a guard to prevent injury of the windmill device and the counter balance 8. When the hoop falls over it will rest partly on the edge of the hoop and partly on the under most portion frame 2, in which case neither the blade 8 nor any of the blades 1.2 will touch the pavement.
It will be understood that our invention is not limited strictly to the details of construction described but is as broad as is indicated by the accompanying claims.
What we claim is l in a toy, in combination, a hoop, a device mounted within said hoop for rotation with respect thereto, and means, including an air blade associated with said device, for maintaining said device in a substantially constant inclination with respect to a surface over which said hoop rolled.

In a toy, the combination of a hoop, a transverse frame secured thereto, a shaft extending axially of said hoop and rotatably supported by said frame, a pin extending from said shaft, a device adapted to be rotated by the air rotatably mounted on said pin, and means for maintaining said device in an approximately vertical plane when said hoop is rolledovera surface.

In a toy, the combination of a hoop, a transverse frame secured thereto, a shaft extending axially of said hoop and rotatably supported by said frame, a pin extending forwardly from said shaft, a device adapted to be rotated by the ai" rotatably mounted on said pin, and a curved counter balance blade extending rearwardly from said shaft.
5. In a toy, the combination with a hoop, two curved frame members secured to said hoop and extending outwardly on opposite sides thereof, a shaft extending transversely of said hoop, having its ends journalled in said frame members, a pin projecting from said shaft, a device mounted on said pin for rotation with said shaft, and means, including anair blade connected with said device, for maintaining said device in a substantially constantinclination with respect to a surface over which said hoop is rolled.
