To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, ANDREW KEISER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prophetstown, in the county of WVhiteside and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Sand-Band, of which the following is a specifloat-ion.

The invention relates to improvements in sand-bands.

The object of the present invention is to improve, simplify, and cheapen the construction of sand-bands set forth in Letters Patent No. 195,613, granted me September 25, 1877.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sand-band constructed in accordance with thisinvention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a modification of the invention.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a sand band or shield to prevent dust, dirt, and other extraneous matter entering the hub of a wheel and wearing the parts,

.and it consists of sections 2 and 3, which are hinged together at the top by a rod or pin 4, which passes through suitable lugs 5, formed integral with the section 2, and is engaged by a curved portion or bend 6 of the section 3, and the section 2 has its end 7 curved over the pin and securely excluding and preventing the dust finding entrance at the joint of the section. The sections are composed of curved flanges 8 and webbed portions 9, that are formed integral with the flanges, and the said sections are adapted to be adjusted on the pin 4 to enable the section of the sand band or shield to flt any axle. The adjacent edges of the web portions are shouldered and lap over each other and exclude dust and dirt whether the sections are distended or otherwise. The sections are maintained in their adjusted position by curved arms 10 and 11, that have

12 and 13, that are secured together by a set-screw 14:, which is secured to the end 12 and engages a slot 15 in the end 13, whereby the sections are adapted to be adjusted to large and small axles, and

in order to prevent the ends of the arms slipping their adjacent faces are serrated or roughened. The

16 and 17 are bent at right angles and are provided with perforations that are adapted to receive

bolts

18 and 19 and be secured thereby to lugs 20, formed integrally therewith and projecting laterally from theflange portion of the sections, and the lugs 20 are braced by lateral flanges 21, that are curved and adapted to bear upon the top of the axle and support the sandband. 12 and 13 riveted together and be adjusted by the bolts 18 and 19instead of being provided with a set-screw 14, as before described.

The sand-band is designed to be applied to various styles, and when it is used upon a square axle the curved arm, as illustrated in Fig. at of the accompanying drawings, is provided with a rectangular recess 22 to receive the axle, and they have their upper ends provided with a cross-bar 23, that is provided at its ends with slots 24 to receive bolts and is designed to rest upon the top of the axle.

It will readily be seen that the sand-band is simple and inexpensive in construction and is adapted to be readily adjusted to various sizes and styles of axles.

\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, in a sand-band, of the sections consisting of the curved flanges having their adjacent ends lapping and hinged together and the webbed portions formed integral with the curved flanges and having their adjacent sides lapping and being provided with lugs 20, and the curved arms secured to the lugs and capable of adjustment, substantially as described.

2. The combination, in a sand-band, of the sections consisting of the curved flanges having their adjacent ends secured together and the webbed portions formed integral with the curved flanges and provided with lugs 20, the curved lateral flanges adapted to rest upon an axle, and the curved arms secured to the lugs by bolts and having their adjacent ends pivoted and provided with a set-screw, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. The combination, in a sand-band, of the 10 gether, and the adjustable curved arms 10 11,

pivoted together and fitted to the hinged sections, substantially as described.
