J. M. DEAN TOY CART Filed April '17,
llllll II INVENTOR. J. P1. D EAN ATTORNEY 1 orics.
JOSEPH M. DEAN, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA TOY CART.
Application flled April 17, 1922. Serial No. 554,286.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josarn M. Dream, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sioux Cit in the county of Woodbury- A further object of the invention is the production of a dirigible cart of the above sort.
Furthermore, the invention has for an object the production of a childs toy cart,
simple and inexpensive in construction, yet sturdy and efiicient in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention, consisting in the construction, combination and novel arrangement of parts,
will be fully understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which,
Fig. 1 is a plan of a cart constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, a portion being cut awa to reveal characteristics otherwise conceale Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same, and
Fig. 4 is an inverted plan of a portion of the body.
Referring, now, to the illustrations the body of the device is flat and disposed in substantially a vertical plane, and designed to represent a duck in side elevation, the representation of the head, 5, and breast, 6, of the duck forming the front portion of the body, which is separate from the intermediate and rear portion of the body, indicated at 7. The front portion, 6, is mounted.
by travel wheels, 8, disposed on opposite sides of the said front portion and rotatably mounted on stud axles, 9, propecting laterally from the opposite sides of the said body portion. The body parts, 6 and 7, are suitably so pivoted together as to permit of relatively lateral movement between the said parts.
In the embodiment chosen for illustration I accomglish this by means of a ri id strap, 10, suita 1y secured to the upper e go of the art, 6, and having a rearwardly overhangmg portion, 11, and on the under side of the part, 6, is secured a rigid strap, 12, projecting rearwardly. Through the said straps, 10 and 12, and an opening, 13, in the body portion, 7, is extended a bolt, 14, which holds the parts, 6 and 7, against sagging yet permits free lateral movement of the front wheeled portion, 6, whereby the cart is readily steered. To revent turning the said portion of the b0 y too sharply, which would result in overturning of the cart, I
provide means for limiting the lateral movement of the front portion, preferably consisting of a stop engageable with the rear end portion of the strap, 12, as by securing to the under side of the body portion, 7, a
flat stop, 15, positioned in slightly spaced relation to the strap, 12, and so related thereto that the squared rear end of the strap, 12, will engage the stop, 15, to prevent lateral movement of the part, 6, in either direction beyonda determinate oint, as will be clearly understood from ig. 4. The upper edge of the body, 7, is stralght and has mounted thereon a suitable seat, 16, the rear end portion of which rests u on and is suitably secured to laterally isposed boards, 17, or their equivalent positioned on opposite sides of the body, 7, and serving as supporting means for the rear bolster, preferably comprising a metal strip, 18, secured to the under sideof the boards, 17, and having their end portions bent downwardly, as at 19, to serve as bearings for the rear axle, 20, having fixed on its end portions travel wheels, 21. The said-travel wheels, 21, are mounted eccentrically and in opposite phases whereby it is evident the cart in traveling is given a waddling motion in imitation of a duck. Extending transversely through the head, 5, is a fixed handle bar, 22, whereby the device is steered.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,-
1. A toy cart embodying a flat body having approximately the side contour of a duck, the front and rear body portions being divided vertically, metal ears secured to the upper and lower edges of the front portion and travel wheels fixed eccentrically and in relatively different phases on the axle, to give the body a waddling motion when traveling.
2. A toy cart embodying a flat body having approximately the side contour of a duck, the front and rear body portions being divided vertically, metal ears secured to the upper and lower edges of the front portion and overlapping the rear portion, a bolt pro'ectin; through the latter portion and sai ears, whereby the front portion may reeaee'r swing laterally, a stop on the under edge of the rear body portion engageable with the lower of said ears to limit the lateral swinging of the front body portion, Wheels supporting the front portion, a rotatable axle on the rear portion, and travel Wheels fixed eecentricall and in relatively difierent phases on t e axle, to give the body a waddling motion when traveling.
In testimony whereof, l have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of April, 1922.
JOSEPH M. DEAN.
