Patented Oct. 1, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to toys and has as one of the principal objects thereof the provision of a wheeled toy so constructed and arranged whereby the same may be easily and conveniently 5 steered through the medium of imparting a tilting motion to the body with respect to the wheel.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, durable in use, efiicient in operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like refer- 15 ence characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention partly in section.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 20 22 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a rear transverse sectional View taken on the line 44 of Figure 1.
25 Figure 5 is a detailed transverse sectional view illustrating the body in a tilted position with respect to the wheels.
Figure 6 is a top plan view of the forward portion of the device and illustrating the body in 30 tilted position with respect to the wheels.
In practising my invention, as illustrated in the drawings, I provide a body 5 constructed in the form of an automobile and fashioned with front and rear end sections 6 and 1 respectively.
35 The front end sections 6 are of a triangular configuration and are provided with inclined slots 8 through which extends the front axle 9. The front axle 9 is provided, intermediate its ends, with a bearing block I through which extends a pivot bolt l I, the latter being pivotally connected to a bearing I2 secured to the front of the body between the front end sections as clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 6 of the drawing.
The rear end sections 1 are provided with vertically disposed slots 14 through which extends the rear axle IS, the latter being provided, intermediate its ends, with a bearing block I6. The
bearing block l6 has extending therethrough a pivot bolt H, the latter being pivotally connected between the rear end sections 1, to the rear portion l8 of the body 5.
Superjacent the bearing block I 6, the rear portion i8 is provided with a bracket 20 to which is 55 secured a rubber bumper 2| engaging the bearing block I6 and which normally serves to maintain the body in a horizontal position with respect to both of the front and rear axles, the latter being provided with wheels 22.
As clearly illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 of the drawing, tilting of the body serves to position the body at an angle with respect to the axles and causes the axles to be disposed in angular relation within the slots 8 and M, thus enabling the toy to be readily and easily steered in a desired direction. While the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawing is preferably constructed of metal, it is to be understood that any other desirable material may be used.
Without further elaboration the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the 15 same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used coniointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and sub-combinations.
t is obvious that the invention is not confined to the herein described use therefor as it may be utilized-for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation, which are capable of extended application in various forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: I
1. A toy of the class described, comprising, a body having front and rear end sections provided with upwardly extending elongated slots, wheeled axles extending through said slots, bearing blocks carried by said axles and pivoted to said body between said sections for disposing said axles in angular relation to said body upon tilting of the latter to efiect steering of said toy, a resilient bumper carried by said body and engaging one of said blocks for normally maintaining said axles in horizontal relation with said body.
2. A toy of the class described, comprising, a body having front and rear end sections provided with upperwardly extending elongated slots, wheeled axles extending through said slots, bearing blocks carried by said axles, means pivoting said blocks to said body between said sections for disposing said .axles in angular relation to said body upon tilting of the latter to effect steering of said toy, a resilient bumper carried by said body and engaging one of said blocks for normally maintaining said axles in horizontal relati n with said body.
ALBERT L. MOI-IENRY.
