CONVERTIBLE COASTER.

Application filed March 26, 1918.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT J. MATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bolivar, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Convertible Coasters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as coasters, and more particularly has reference to a convertible coaster.

As the primary aim and object, the present invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above character designed so as to be used on snow or ice in the capacity of a toboggan, or else converted and used as a wheel coaster when there is no ice or snow on the ground.

As an additional object, the present invention embraces the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein improved manually operable steering means is mounted on the main body or runner so as to enable the occupant to accurately guide the coaster when in use.

More particularly, this invention consists in the provision of a coaster of the above mentioned character wherein a platform is mounted on the body or runner for supporting at least one foot of the occupant, while the parts are constructed to permit of the occupant placing one foot on the ground to facilitate propelling of the coaster when desired.

Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the above mentioned character with a view to compactness, and wherein the parts are few, the construction simple, the cosiil of production low and the efliciency hi ther improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the principle of operation of the various parts.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device when used in the capacity of a toboggan.

Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.

Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device when used as a wheel coaster.

Fig. 1 is a-top plan view of the device showing the wheels and axles attached.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a main body 1 the main portion of which is relatively flat as indicated by the numeral 2 while the body is formed of wood or suitable metal and has the forward end curved slightly upwardly as indicated by the numeral 3 and the rear end also curved abruptly upwardly as indicated by the numeral 4. This body constitutes a runner when the device is used in the capacity of a coaster while mounted in spaced relation on the main portion slightly rearwardly of the center thereof is a supporting platform 5 held in spaced relation to the body or runner through the instrumentality of supports 6.

In order to steer the body or runner 1 a sleeve 7 is formed on the terminal of the upwardly curved forward portion 3. A steering rod 8 is employed and carries bracket arms 9 on the opposite sides of the lower end and these arms project longitudinally from the rod and in divergent relation with respect thereto being formed in their outer ends with openings 10 through which is engaged a bolt 11 which also is passed through the sleeve 7 so as to swingingly connect the steering rod to the body 1. A nut 12 serves to prevent accidental displacement of the bolt 11. A handle 12 is mounted on the op posite end of the rod and is designed to be grasped by the occupant when standing on the platform so as to assure of the proper steering of the device.

When it is desired to convert the device into a wheel coaster, when there is no ice or snow on the ground opposed pairs of bearings 13 and 14 project upwardly from the side edges of the main body 1 adjacent the forward and rear ends respectively thereof while removably journaled in the bearings are axles 15 on the respective ends of which are removably and operably mounted supporting wheels 16 which serve to support the body in spaced relation to the ground.

In use, assuming that the parts have been assembled in the manner described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, to propel the device when used in the capacity of a 'toboggai'i, the aziles and wheels are disconnected so that the body may act as a runner while the platform serves to support at least one foot of the occupant when the latter is in a substantial upright position so as to be capable of placing the other foot on the ground to facilitate the propelling of the device, the handle of course being held in the hands of the occupant so that the device can be properly steered. The operation, of course, is the same when the device is used in weather when there is no ice or snow on the ground, it being only necessary to attach the axles 15 and the wheels so as to support the body or runner 1 in spaced relation to the ground.

It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise, it is thought that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof and it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claim is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall thercbctwecn.

Having thus fully described this inven tion, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters-Patent is:

A convertible coaster including a body designed in the form of a runner and having a relative fiat main portion the forward portion of which is curved upwardly, a transverse sleeve formed at the upper terminal of the upwardly curved portion. a handle. bracket arn'is .ill'llCCl by one end of the haudle, abolt and nut arrangement for detachably connecting the bracket arms to the sleeve, and means for equipping the body with wheels.
