Application filed March 13, 1926. Serial No. 94,529. i
. to produce a toy This invention relates to improvements in toys and has particular reference to a coaster. V
The principal object or" this invention is of the coaster type which will be safe to use.
Another object of this invention is to produce a toy which will simulate a sled, but one which will travel over any relatively smooth surface, in coiintermlistinction to a sled requiring a slippery surface.
An additional object is to provide means; whereby the braking action will be much greater than is possible where brakes are merely applied to the wheels.
A still further object is to produce a device which is simple in construction, sturdy, and one which will stand the customary hard usage given a toy of this kind by a child.
Other objects and advantages will parent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my device,
Figure 2 is a side elevation with-one of the rear runners removed, in order to better illustrate my invention,
Figure 8 is a bottom plan view of Figure 1,
Figure i is a cross section taken on the line it- 1 of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a cross section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the ordinary top board of a sled. To this top board I secure a yoke 6 through which a kingbolt 7 passes.
To this king-bolt I pivot-ally support a cross brace 8 to which runners 9 and 11 are secured. A cross brace 12 serves to further steady the runners 9 and 11, at the same time they may be used for steering purposes.
At 13 I have shown an axle extending between the runners 9 and 11 and upon which wheels 14 and 16 are secured. At 17 and 18 I have shown the rear runners of my sled between which is pivoted a yoke 19, the same being pivoted upon a cross rod 21. This yoke carries an axle 22 upon which wheels 23 and 24; are adapted to rotate.
be ap- A link 26 is secured to the axle 22 and has its'forward end pivotally connected to the end 27 of a crank 28, which crank is pivot ally supported as at 29 and 31, upon a block 32 secured upon the underside of the board 5. Thiscrank has a lever 33 through the medium of which the apparatus may be operated.
The manner of using my scooter is as follo'ws Assuming that the lever 38 is in the position shown in Figure 2, the wheels 23 and 24 will be in contact with the ground, thus raising the runners 17 and 18 out of contact with the ground. The weight of the user upon the board 5 will tend to cause the yoke 19 to pivot about its cross rod 21, but owing to the fact that the pivotal connection of the link 26 to the end of the crank 28 is above center and, therefore bearing against the underside of the board 5, the Wheels cannot move rearwardly and will, therefore, support the load.
When it is desired to stop the vehicle, the operator lifts upon the handle 38 which moves the pivotal point of the link 26 with the crank 28 below the center of the bearings 29 and 81, with the resultthat the ve hicle will immediately drop, bringing the runners 17 and 18 into contact with the ground, at which time the wheels 23and 241 and their associated parts will assume the dotted line position of Figure 2.
The action or. he runners 17 and 18 com ing into contact with the ground will cause the braking action over a considerable surface of the runner bottom, thus stopping, the vehicle in the shortest possible space.
It will thus-be seen that I have produced a sled which will accomplish all oi the ob-- jects above set forth.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes size and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoincd claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a toy of the character described, a board, a pair of front runners pivotally secured below said board, a pair of wheels positioned between said runners, a pair of rearin the shape, a.
5 said axle and extendi runners rigidly secured to said board, a yoke pivotzrlly .mannted "between.
-an ai1e secured to said yoke, wheels a link connected to forwardlv th reners, posltioned on said axle,
"said Tear runfrom, a lever pivoted sen-am said lanai a crank formed on said lever,
the end of said crank being engaged by the end of said link in such a manner as to hav its end bear against said board and at a 'point llhove the 10 pivotal point of said lever.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EARL REEK.
