Description

H. W. YOUNG.
FUSE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED 0017,1912.
Patented Feb. 17, 1914 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' HARRY W. YOUNG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FUSE-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY W. YonNc, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FusesHolders, of which the following. is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in electrical fuse holders and has for its. object the production of a device of this character which will be so. constructed that a. fuse may be readily and easily arranged therein and as. expeditiously detached therefrom when desired.
A further object is the production of a fuse holder of the character mentioned which witl be durable and economical in construction and absolutely safe in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fuse holder embodying my invention, the hingarrangement, it will be seen that the base of the head of the screw is inaccessible and so edly connected parts of the holder being shown in open ositions, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the holder, Fig.3is a central longitudinal section of the holder, Fig. 4: is a transverse section taken on line w-m of Fig. 3, and Fig. is a plan. view of one'of the fuses adapted, for use in conjunction. with.
the holder.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in. the drawings, comprises a tubular body which is formed of insulating material, fiber being preferably used in this connection. Said body is cylindrical in form and is constituted of two similar half parts 1, each of which is semi-circular in cross-section. The central. portions of the parts 1.are lined within with a layer of noncombustible material, asbestos .being preferably used, this non-combustible layer of lining serving to protect the body 1 against fire.
Provided at the extremities of the body of the holder are metallic caps, each of which comprises two similar half parts 3, said cap parts 3 being secured to the body parts 1 by flanges 4 which are formed at the edge of said cap parts, as shown "in the several views, said flanges embracing the adjacent edges of said body parts. The cap parts 3 Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filfli Qcteber i 1912. Serial No. 724,334.
parallelly extending portion 9. at. theinner end of each of the ears 8 is a screw- 10, the head of which projects through Patented Feb. 17,1914.
at one end of the body are hingedly connected at 5 so as to permit the component parts of the holder being swung to positions indicated in Fig. 1, in order to permit of ready insertion or removal of a fuse, as hereinafter described. One of the cap parts 3 at the opposite end of the holder is provided with a spring tongue (3, the slotted free end of which is adapted to engage with .lug 7 provided upon the corresponding cap part 3 in order to releasably lock the parts of the holder in closed position, as clearly shown in- Fig. 3'.
Formed upon each of thecapparts 3 at the respective ends of one of the body parts "1 is an inwardly projecting ear 8, the inner end of which is bent upon itself to form a Provided a perforation provided in the ear, the stem of said screw passing through an alining :perforation provided in the portion 9, the head of the screw being provided at its base :with an annular flange 11 which is interposed between portions 8 and 9 in order to :constitute a swivel connection between the screw and the support therefor. With this that in. use, the possibility of inserting a rail or other article thereunder to serve as a fuse and thereby defeat the purpose of the 4 fuse, will be precluded. Threaded upon the lower end of each of the screws 10 is a nut .12 which is held against rotation by means of depending flanges 13 provided upon the opposite edges of cars 8. p
In use the fuse 14 is held in position in the holder by inserting the bifurcated ends 15 thereof between the end-portions 9 of the supporting ears 8 and the nuts 12, clampingof said fuse in position being effected by rotating the screws, as will be readily understood. Transversely extending partitlons 16 of non-combustible material, preferably asbestos, are provided within each of the body parts 1 which are so arranged that, when the body parts are in closed position, an inclosed chamber will be formed about the central or weakened portion of the fuse and so that when the blowout or fusion occurs, the incidental sparks will be prevented from escaping, thereby averting accidents which might otherwise result. 1
holder, it beingclear, that when the holder is in open position, the screws 10 will be readily accessible for releasing the spent fuse and for securing a new fuse in its place.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of Variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let tors Patent, is
1. A fuse holder comprising a hollow body, inwardly projecting supporting arms at the ends of said body, the inner ends of said arms being bent back upon themselves;
screws swiveled in said arms and having heads provided with enlarged base portions, the base portions of the heads of said screws being interposed between said arms and the bent back portions thereof, and one of said arm portions being provided with an opening somewhat smaller than and adapted to receive the corresponding screw head; and nuts cooperating with said screws for engaging the ends of a fuse arranged in the holder, substantially as described.
2. A fuse holder comprising a hollow elongated body of insulating material, said body being divided into two separable parts; means formed of conducting material provided at the extremities of said body parts for hingedly securing said parts together; inwardly projecting supporting arms on v said last mentioned means, the inner ends of said arms being bent back upon themselves; screws swiveled in said arms, the
base portions of the heads of said screws being interposed between said arms and the bent back portions thereof; and nuts cooperating with said screws for engaging the ends of a fuse arranged in the holder, substantially as described.
3.'A fuse holder comprising a hollow elongated body of insulatlng material, said body being divided into two separable parts; means formed of conducting material provided at the extremities of sand body parts for hingedly securing said parts together; inwardly projecting supporting arms on said last mentioned means, the inner ends of said arms being bent back upon themselves; depending flanges on said arms, screws swiveled in said arms, the base portions of the heads of said screws being interposed between said arms and the bent back portions thereof; and non-rotatable nuts threaded on said screw for engaging the ends of a fuse arranged in the holder, substantially as described.
4. A fuse holder comprising a hollow elongated body of insulating material, said body being divided longitudinally into two separable parts; a hinge connection between said parts; inwardly projecting supporting means formed of conducting material provided at the ends of said body; means at the inner ends of said supporting means for fastening thereto the respective ends of a fuse arranged in said body; and transversely extending partitions of non-combustible material in said body parts adapted, when said body parts are in registration,'to form a central chamber in said body, substantially as described.
5. A fuse holder comprising a tubular body of insulating material; a layer of noncombustible material lining the inner side of said body, said body consisting of two similar parts substantially semi-circular in cross-section; caps of conducting material and of corresponding-form provided at the extremities of said body parts; a hinge connection between the caps at one end of said body; means upon the caps at the opposite end of said body for releasably locking said parts in closed position; an inwardly projecting supporting arm provided on one of said caps at each end of said body; means at the inner ends of said arms for releasably fastening thereto the respective ends of a fuse arranged in said body; and transversely extending partitions of non-c0mbustible material in said body parts adapted, when said body parts are in registration, to form a central chamber in said body, substantially as described.
Intestimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses:
, HARRY W. YOUNG. Witnesses: A. A. OLsoN, B. G. RICHARDS.
