EGBERT ALEXANDER, OF BURLNGAME, CALIFORNIA.
BEFILLABLE CARTRIDGE-FUSE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rat-enten sept'. is, 191e.
Application filed July 19, 1915. Serial No. 40,793.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EGnnT ALEXANDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Burlingame, county of San Mateo, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Refillable Cartridge-Fuses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to relillable cartridge .fuses as set forth in the Patent No. 1,101,897, issued to me on the 30th day of June, 1914, and the present specification relates to improvements in the construction of the fuse whereby the same may be produced more cheaply and rendered more ellicient. I accomplish these several features by means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification, wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specilication and drawings, and in which- Figure 1 is a broken Vertical sectional view of the cartridge disclosing the manner in which the disks are detachably secured to the ends thereof so as to close the said cartridge. Fig. 2 is a plan View of Fig. 1l Fig. 3 is' a view similar to Fig. 1 but with the disk removed. Fig. e is a plan view of Fig. 3, with the fuse removed. Fig. 5 is-a broken front elevation of Fig. 1 disclosing the manner in which one end of the inclosedv fuse ribbon extends beyond the disk, and Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the fuse ribbon removed from the cartridge.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to designate a hollow cylinder of :.ny suitable insulating material having the ends thereof provided with metallic caps 2. Approximately one half of the end of each cap; 2 is bent back upon the other half as at 3 so as to provide a double thiol-ness of metal. This double thickness enables a greater number of threads to be had in an aperture 4 thereby foi-ming greater security for securing a screw 5 which in turn engages and retains a disk (l by means of an aperture 7 therein, said aperture 7 being arranged to coincide withthe lirst mentioned aperture l.
The remaining portion of the end of each cap 2 is extended beyond the double thick- 3 and is formedr into a semifannular flange 8 which is adapted to engage approximately one half of the periphery of the disk 6 as disclosed in Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawings.
I T he double thickness 3 has a channel 9 formed therein, as disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawings, adapted to receive the end of a ribbon fuse 10 which extends, on onel which determines the conductivity of the cartridge.
Rectangular extensions 14 are provided on each disk 6 which 1s the usual arrange Ymeint for fuses above a certain amperage,
said extensions 14 being adapted to engage the terminals between which the cartridge is to be inserted.
The spaceI within the hollow cylinder 1 and the ribbon fuse 10 lilled with bismuth or a like substance in order to confine arcing when the fuse 10 is blown out.
The cartridge may be easily and readily refilled by removing the screw 5 and sliding the disk (5 from under the annular flange 8,. After the blown fuse has been removed a new one is replaced with the ends thereof in the channel 9. The cartridge may then be refilled with bismuth or a like substance and the disk (3 replaced with one half of the periphery thereof under the annular flange 8. llhen the screw 5 is screwed into position, 'thc disk (i will force the ends of the ribbon fuse 10 into the channels 9 thereby tightly closing the cartridge.
ln order to properly secure the caps 2 to the cylinder 1 the edges of the said caps Q are crimped at regular intervals as at 15.
lt is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved construction for a refillable cartridge fuse .vliereby the same may be cheaply produced and at the same time rendered accessible for refilling purposes.
Having thus described lny invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A reiillable cartridge fuse comprising a cylinder of suitable insulating material; a metallic cap secured to each end of thc cylinder and having a portion of the end thereof bent back upon itself thereby forming a double thickness of metal, and a seuirannulariange-formed on said end; a, suitable ribbon fuse connecting` the caps; :i metal disk engaging the Harige; and Ineens securing; the disk within the ienge and to the double thickness of metal.
2. A. refillzihle cartridge frise comprising e cylinder of suitable insuleing material; e
metallic oep secured to each end of t ie cylinder and having e portion of 42h-e eno; there of hen?, back upon itself thereby forming e double hickness of metal und a threaded eperrure Within said double hickness; a seminnnuler formed opposite the double thickness; e suitable riooon fuse connecting the caps; n disk engaging the flange; and e screw screwed into the double thickness of metal and securing` the disk within. the Hangs.
3. A ref ilnble cartridge i'use comprising a. cylinder or' suitable insulating materiel; .metallic oop secured to each end of the cylinder and having portion of rho end thereof bent hoek upon .iisei' thereby forining a double thickness of motel, une e chonnel formed in seid double hickness and heving n 'threaded nperibnre and e seini-onnninr 'iionsre formed onnosie seid double thickness; n suitable ribbon fuse having the ends hereoi engaging the channel in the end of each cap; e disk on each cap engaging bhe inng'e thereon; :ind e screw eorewed info each threaded aperture and engaging he disk thereb)7 retaining `the ends of the Within 'the channels.
4l. A relillable cartridge fuse ceinpraisingl u cylinder of suitable insulning materiel; a. .metallic cup securedto each end of the syliinde and having :i portion or the end the e of bent hack upon r erohj/ forinizig :i
double thickness of metal, and e channel formed in said double thickness and a, threaded aperture penetrating the channel and e; semi-annuler lenge formed opposite io each double thickness; a ribbon fuse hav#- ing the ends'thereo within the channels; a
disk on each can engaging" the semi-annuler inder and having s portion of the end thereor lient back upon itself thereby forming n double thickness oir ineoi having a. channel herein and e threaded operi-ure penetrating` seid channel, end e semi-annular flange formed opposite the double thickness; a sultaole rihhon fuse haring the ends thereof within vhe channels, one end. of seid fuse extending beyond the side of he cap und partwav down the side hereof thereby.providing f e visible surface whereon `the :nnpemge of the fuse may he indicated; a disk on euch clip engaging the sen'ii-ennul:ir Hengc and #ghe ends oi' the fuse und having apertures therein coinciding with the threaded aperiirr'is in the caps; and a suitable screwsc erred inro the threaded aperture and en gagging rho apertures Within the disks there hy retaining the seid disk Within theselniannuler flanges end faire ends of the fuse.. Wihin the channels.
'in witness whereof I my signorine.
