SEWING-MACHINE HEAD.
Specification of Letters l atent.
Patented Feb. 1?, 1914.
Application filed March 13, 1912. Serial No. 683,428.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALICE G. CooPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego, in the county of San Diego. and State of California, have invented certain new and useful ing-Machine Heads, is a specification.
- My invention relates to a scale or guide on the top surface of the bed plate of a sewing and the objects of my invention, are, to provide a scale readily visible to the operator of a sewing machine, to gage the distance of the seam from the edge. of the cloth or the width of hems and the like, and to provide a means to facilitate a uniformity in seams and the like and further to provide a ready means for measuring the width thereof.
With these and other objects in 'view as will appear, my invention consists in certain novel features .of construction. combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claim, reference being Improvements in Sewof which the following had to the accompanying drawings and to .I
the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which Figurel is a perspective view of a sewing machine head, showing my preferred construction, Fig. 2 is a similar View of the same showing a scale placed on a sewing machine head in a modified form from that shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the scale plate.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
. In the drawings, numeral 1 represents the bed plate of the sewing machine head, 2 the arm, 3 the needle plate, 4 the front slide, 5 the back slide and 6 the scale plate. The sewing machine head is of the ordinary'type, except that the needle plate 8 is provided with a scale starting at the needle hole therein and the inner ends of the slides 4 and 5 are provided with a continuation of said scale. Inserted in the bed plate 1 is'my scale plate 6 bed plate 1, and it is provided on its upper surface with a continuation of the scale upon the slides 4 and 5.,
In my modified construction, instead of inserting a plate 6 for the, scale, the scale is which is preferably set into the Y simply placed directly onthe upper surface of the bed plate, continuing the scale on the slides 4 and 5.
Though I have shown and described particular methods of placing a scale on sewing machine heads, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, but desire to include in the purview of my. invention, the placing of a scale, starting at the needle hole in the needle plate and extending some dis tance toward the arm connection, substan- 65 tially as set forth in the appended claim.
It will be readily seen that with this scale, the determining and main aining of the width and uniformity of seams, hems and the like will be greatly facilitated.
Having thus described my invention, what ters Patent is v In a sewing machine the combination of a needle plate, provided with a scale-starting at the needle hole therein and extending to the outer edge longitudinally with the bed plate of the machine, front and rear slides contiguous to said needle plate provided with a continuation of said scale on their inner ends and a plate detachably mounted longitudinally with the bed plate of the machine provided with a continuation of said scale upon said slide.
claim as new and desire tosecure by Let- In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name in subscribing witnesses.
