Description

RL KLEMM L M. RORARIUS.
METHOD 0F EMBROIDERING. APPLIOATION FILED MAR. 18, 1909.

METHOD OF EMBROIDERING. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RUDOLPH Kwant and county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful lrnprovements in Methods of Embroidering, of which the following is a specilication.
The present invention relates to a novel method of embroidering and particularly to a method of producing relief embroidery designs by hand or shuttle looms on any kind of Inaterlal, as inuslin, linen, net, etc.
The new method consists in that the design is first embroidered on the goods in ordinary manner, then a lining is sewed to the back ofthe goods along the contour of and across the design; then the design at one end is severed from the goods, whereby a pocket or cavity is formed between the goods and lining, which pocket is stutted with cotton orA other material to produce the relief effect.
To make the invention more clear the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts and in which-- Figure 1 shows a front View of a piece. of embroidered goods; Figs. 2, 3 and 5 are cross sections illustrating the different phases of the embroidering method, and Fig. l is a rear view of the embroidered goods.
o. denotes the goods upon which in. ordinary manuel' the designs are embroidered. ln the present example the designs are twi the blossoms c of which are to appear in reliet, from the point d to the cross border e. To produce this effect a lining f of any suitable material, preferably of like material the goods, is sewed to the back of the latter, the stitches (y being made through the ernbroidered contour of the design and in the present example also through the border c. When the lining is attached the design is severed' from the goodsl along the border e,

the lining, which is sewed to the goods around the part of the contour below the border a and crosswise to the goods above the border forming the back part of the pocket /i thus produced. The unnecessary parts of the lining outside of the stitches can he cut away and the cavity or pocket It stuffed with suitable material, as cotton or the like, whereby the outer part z' ofthe pocket is projected and the relief effect obtained.
Generally the lining will be a long continuous piece, as the goods upon which the designs are embroidered and the unnecessary parts of the lining will be cut away when the work is completed. Vhen the lining is of the same material as 'the goods the insertion or attachment of the lining will be almost unnoticeable.
Then the entire blossom or other design isto appear in relief, instead of, as in the present example only up to the border c, it nm'lerstood that the stitches in sewing on the lining to the back of the goods, will have to be made through the embroidered contour of the design all around and the severance made on any side or end of the design.
Nhat we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
A method of producing relief embroidery designs7 consisting in embroidering the design in ordinary manner upon the goods, sewing' to the barkof the latter' through the contour of the design a lining, severing the design from the goods at any side and stuff ing the pocket or cavity thus produced.
