B e it known that I, EDWARD IBmaKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamburg, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain n ew and useful Improvements in Draw-Strlng l Garments, of which the following is a speciication.

My invention relates to garments having K- the novel features are pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 indicates an undergarment having a neck opening provided with a tubular edging to which my invention-is applied.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary outside view of the meeting ends of the tubular edging attached to the fabric.

Fig. 3 is a similar inside view of the same.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.

Figs. 5 and 6 are enlarged cross-sectional views on the lines 5--5 and 6 6, respectively, of Fig. 2.

'Fig 7 shows a sectional view of a modified formV of tubular edging.

n In the drawing I have shown an undergarment, the neck portion of which is usually provided with a draw string for adjusting the size of the opening. The body portion 10 of this garment is usually formed of some elastic material, preferably tubularly knit goods, and the cutout neck and arm openings are finished by sewing thereto `a separate edging tape 11. This edging tape,

particularly for the neck opening, is preferably of tubular form or the like, adapted to inclose a draw string 12 the ends of which are extended through a front aperture formed at the meeting ends of the edging tape,.so as to conveniently locate them for adjusting the size of the neck opening.' The securing of the meeting ends of this edging tape 11 in a neat and strong manner has proved troublesome and expensive, requiring an experienced and skilled operator.V

f 13T-13 of this tubular 11, 'which latter is secured tothe fabric 10 by stitching 141 elldgsecure these..overlappedY ends .by stitching them directly together.` This stitching, as sho-wn, is preferably in the form of button-hole stitching 15 about registering apertures in the overlapped vends 13-13, thus forming an aperture' 16 through the united ends. The edgingv ends are trimmed close to the button hole stitching 15 and the tubular edging .is firmly and lneatly7 united in a simple manner. No skilled labor is required to neatly abut the meeting ends, and the stitching may be readily done on anv ordinary button hole machine by any operator.

the button holed aperture '16, and extend- Y ing only through the rear walls of the edging 11 short of the overlapped ends 18-.13. These apertures may be readily formed, as for instance, by the operator in inserting the draw string, lirstpassing the bodkin', employed to readily insert the draw string,

rearward through aperture 16, then through opening 17, punching the latter if not previously provided, then inside the tubular edging until aperture 18 is reached, punching this also if not previously provided, `and then back through aperture 16. The ends of the draw string may then be drawn up as desired and tied in a neat bow to secure the adjusted neck opening.

This construction it will be readily seen, provides a neat and strong union of the meeting ends of the edging, while permitf Vting the ready insertion-of the draw string,

and is readily and cheaply manufactured. Instead of the tubular tapeV described, a

folded tape may be employed as shown in Fig. 7 And my improved edging may be readily adapted for any garment in which a draw string is employed, while the'latter may` obviously be in two parts if4 desired,

separately' secured within 'the tape instead of' A extending continuously through the same, the tier ends however passing through `the respective openings 17 and 18 and jointly through aperture 16 as stated. y

What I claim is:

1. A garment having a draw string por-'- tion formed by a tubular edging strip se- Y cured to an edge of the garment fabric with its end portions overlapping thereon; Said Y overlapped strip portions being united and provided with registering apertures, and the adjacent portions of said strip being provided with separate draw stringvopenings ythrough one Wall thereof; and a draw string in said tubular strip having its end portions projected singly through the respective draw string openings and jointly through said overlap aperture.

2. A garment having a draw string portion formed by a tubular strip secured to an edge of the garment fabric with its end portions overlapping thereon, said overlapped strp portions being united by buttonhole stitching of registering apertures therein, andthe adjacent portions of said Strip being provided with separate draw string openings through one Wall thereof; and a draw string in said tubular strip having its end portions projected singly through the respective draw string openings and jointly through said overlapped aperture.
