v i 0 1,602,091 PATENT e Fries.
ARTICLE FORMED 0E NARROW wEEBInG.
Application filed A ril 13, 1923; Serialno. 631.784. I
This invention relates to the finishing of narrow strips of textile material such as the webbing commonly used in garment supporters and the object is to provide an im proved construction whereby such strips can be given an attractive and durable finish and one which will if necessary serve as a reinforcement. As an example of my invention I have here shown an illustrative form thereof applied to the buttonhole loops of a sus pender end and this application of the 1nvention will be readily understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a suspender end- Fig. 2 is a view of web from which the buttonhole loop is formed; and
Fig. 3 is a section on an enlarged scale on the line 38 of Fig. 1.
For the purposes of illustration I have herein shown the invention .as applied to a suspender end such as is disclosed in the application of Alfred M. Ziegler, Serial No. 522,258, filed Dec. 1 1, 1921, and embodying a pair of buttonhole loops 5, each comprising a short piece or strip of textile webbing having the ends folded around an elastic cord 7, embodying a rubber spring with a braided cover, and secured thereto by stitching 9. My invention more particularly relates to providing a finish for the free ends of these pieces of webbing which in the present instance serves as a reinforcement preventing the tearing out of the buttonholes 11 under strain.
Referring to Fig. 2, I have there shown to the end of the web. This method of folding is not in itself novel.
To secure the folded parts of the web in position they .are sewed together and this sewing preferably extends throughout a substantial area ofthe folded portions. To effect this I prefer to utilize stitches or rows of stitches extending substantially lengthwise of the web and substantially parallel to each other and the length of these stitchings may be progressively varied so that the stitching forms as a whole a triangular block of stitching corresponding in contour substantially to the contour of the end of the buttonhole loop beneath the buttonhole, although conveniently smaller in area, and securely darning together the folded por tions. The stitching 17 is conveniently effected by machine and in this case utilizes a bobbin or thread at the back, but I have not thought it practicable to illustrate in Fig. 3 the use of two threads but have merely indicated the stitches 17 in .a more or less diagrammatic'fashion. The variation in the length of the stitches may be effected auto- .matically by the use of a suitable cam on the sewing machine and it will be noted that they are all applied substantially parallel, extending in the same direction, and there is no need for the operator to turn the work w during the operation. Thus the construction, while being a very strong one, is very rapidly and simply made.
A series of stitchings 17 on the face of the webbing emphasizes the contour of the end portion thereof and if closely set together have the appearance of embroidery andmay be of .a color contrasting with that of the web. A particularly ornamental effect is obtained in the case of .a suspender end of the type herein described wherein the bar of stitching 9 and the stitching 17 are made of the same attractive color.
I have described in detail one particular embodiment of my invention as applied to the construction of a suspender end. Obviously it is adaptable to the finish of the ends of narrow members utilized in other garment supporters or in other relations whether or not subserving the additional function of providing a buttonhole reinforcement as in the present instance. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I shall express in the following claims.
Claims:
1. In an article of the class described, a strip having a buttonhole therein and portions folded inwardly and substantially to the longitudinal median line of the strip providing an end of multiple thickness, the
thicknesses of the end being secured toand in alignment with the buttonhole securingthe several plies together thereby to utilize the inwardly folded portions as a reinforcement.
2. In an article of the class described, a strip having a buttonhole therein, an end of multiple thickness beyond the buttonhole presenting portions inwardly folded substantially to the longitudinal median line of the strip and providing additional plies and a block of parallel longitudinal stitches beyond and in alignmentwith the buttonhole extending through the end and the extra plies thereof and securing them together whereby to utilize said additional plies as a reinforcement.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
