MICHAEL MGCANN, OF GLENMORRIS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO FREDERICK OSANN COMPANY, 01 NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NW YORK.
BUTTONHOLE AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL MOCANN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in 'Glenmorris, Long Island, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im-. provements in Buttonholes and Methods'of Making the Same. of which the following is 1 a true and exact description,- reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to the formation of a stitched button hole and has for its object to provide a button hole which, by reason of the formation and co-relation of its formative stitches. will be stronger, better looking and, in the direction of its length, less extensible than has heretofore been the case with stitched button holes. The essential novel feature of my new button hole and of my new method lies in the formation of two lines of straight stitches said lines running parallel to each other on each side of the button hole and the formation over these straight lines of stitches of two lines of zig .zag stitches such as are usually formed by button hole sewing machines. By preference I also form barring stitches at each end of the button hole and in the usual manner.
The function of the straight lines of stitches in my new button hole is two fold; first, these straight lines of stitches, being comparatively inextensible, prevent the longitudinal stretching of the button hole which is important; with stretchable knitted or woven goods, and second, these lines of stitches serve as padding stitches for the overlying zig zag lines of stitches giving them an attractive rounded contour.
In the drawing which illustrates my invention- Figure 1 is a somewhat diagrammatic face view of my new button hole.
Figure 2 is a face or plan view showing the two lines of straight stitches and a series of barring stitches at one end of the lines of straight stitches.
Figu the goods taken on one line of straight stitches, a needle and looper being also shown as co-operating to form the stitches in the form of looped stitches, and
re 3 is a sectional elevation through Figure is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a portion of the straight lines of stitches as overlaid by zig zag stitches.
A indicates the goods in which the button hole is formed. B, Fig. 3, is aneedle end, C a co-operating looper andD a thread used in stitching the button hole but it will be understood that any type of sewing machine may be used in stitching my button hole which can as well be formed of lock stitches as of loop stitches. E, E, etc. and e, 6, etc., are two parallel lines of straight stitches, one formed on each side of the button hole to be formed. F and f are barring stitches formed at one end of the stitches E and e. (l and g are zig zag stitches formed over the straight stitch lines E and e, and H, h, are barring stitches formed at the finish end of the button hole.
My button hole can be formed on any type of button hole sewing machine organized to form zig zag stitches by organizing such a machine to'form the two lines of straight stitches preliminary to the ordinary zig zag H, h, maiy be formed first then the straight stitches 6, then the barring stitches F, f, and finally the zig zag stitches G, g.
In my pending application filed Sept. 23, 1919, Serial No. 325,710 I have described a machine especially adapted to form my new button hole but the button hole can be made in any way, even by hand, and I do not wish my claims to' be understood to be limited to a machine made button hole.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. -As a new article of manufacture a button hole having two parallel lines of straight stitches extending from end to end of the button hole one on each side thereof and two lines of zig zag stitches formed over the straight stitches.
2. As a new article of manufacture a button hole having two parallel lines of straight stitches extending from end to end of the button hole one on each side thereof, two lines of zig zag stitches formed over the straight stitches and barring stitches formed at the ends of the button hole.
3. The method of forming a button hole which consists in forming two parallel lines of straight stitches extending from end to of straight stitches extending from end to end of the button hole one on each side 1 end of the button hole one on each side thereof, forming barring stitches at each end thereof and subsequentl 1 forming over each of said lines of stitches and forming a series a of said straight lines 0 stitches a series of of zig zag stitches over each line of straight zig z%]stitches. stitches.
4. e method of forming a button hole which consists in forming two parallel lines MICHAEL McCAN N.
