TAB-INSERTING MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. IIALLIDAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Vatervliet, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tab-Inserting Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and. combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompany ing drawings, and the reference charzu'xters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view of a portion of a sewing-machine pro vided with my improved mechanism, where by itis adapted for inserting collar-tabs, the needle and resser-foot bar being shown in horizontal section and one end, of the collar and tab being shownin the proper insert ing position determined by the gage-mechanism. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the collar, presser-foot and needle removed. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the gage for the tab. Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of the gage for the wing-end of the collar body. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one end of the collar with its inserted tab. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section of the presser-foot taken on the broken line 6--6 in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a vertical cross-section taken through the throat-plate on the broken line 7-7 in Fig. 2.
This invention relates more particularly to mechanism for inserting buttonhole-tabs in the end-portions of wing-collars, such as is shown in Fig. 5.
The principal object of the invention is to facilitate the insertion of the tab, and to secure uniformity and accuracy in the location of the tab in the finished collar. In a collar of this type the body-portion of the collar is formed of two blanks or members having their edges inturned by means of folding-machines in the usual manner, said blanks being superimposed one upon another with the inturned edges therebetween and secured together by through-andthrough stitching along said inturned edges. ably made of machine'turncd blanks, is inserted between the body-members along an oblique end-portion thereof which is left unstitched until the tab is inserted, after which the collar is stitched through and through along said oblique end-portion to complete the edge-stitching of the body of the collar and at the same time to secure the tab thereto.
In carrying out my invention I provide gage-mechanism for placin in their proper relative positions the end 0': the collar body and the tab at the beginning of the inserting operation, and means for separately guiding the inturned edge of the upper body-member and the inturned edge of the lower body-mcmbcr along said oblique end portion during the inserting operation.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 represents the bed of a sewing-machine which is shown provided with a throat-plate, 2, work-feeding mechanism, 3, presser-foot, 4:, and needle, 5, forming part of thehtitchforming mechanism, other parts or which are located beneath the throat-plate through an aperture in which the needle plays. The stitch-forming mechanism and work-feeding mechanism may be of any type adapted for stitching collars and cuffs.
A gage, 6, for the wing-0nd, 13, of the collar-body is mounted upon the bed by means of a set-screw, 7, in position to form a guide for locating the end of the collarbody so that its oblique end-portion, S, will extend parallel with the direction of feedmovement and in proper relation to the needle, In this position it will be apparent that the gage, 6, projects partly across the path of fced-n'lovcnient of the collarbody. To enable the collar-body to ride freely over the gage, 6, in response to the operation of the feed-mechanism, I form the gage, 6, with a beveled edge, 9, presented to the work, of such reduced thickness or attenuation as to readily permit the work to ride thereover. In like manner a gage, 10, for the tab is mounted upon the bed by means of a set-screw, 11, in position to form a guide for locating the tab, 12, in proper relation to the body of the collar for the beginning of the inserting operation. This gage, 10, extends partly across the path of feed-movement of the tab, 19, and I have shown it formed. with a beveled edge, 14.,
presented to the work, which edge is so reduced in thickness or attenuated as to permit the tab to ride thereover in response to the feedmovement of the collar body.
The presser-footis formed with a depending edge-flange 15, adapted to engage the inturne d edge of the upper member, 16, of the collar-body along the oblique end-portion, 8, and guide said edge during the inserting operation. I also provide an undercut gage, 17, directly in front of the pressertoot adapted to enter between the members of the collar body and to engage the inturned edge of the lower member, 18, thereof, directly beneath the inserted portion otthe tab, and to guide said edge along said oblique end-portion, 8, during the inserting operation.
The several gages, 6, 10, and 17, may be mounted upon the bed in any known manner. and the shape of the gages, 6 and 10, may be changed for different styles of collar.

In a machine for inserting collar-tabs, and in combination, stitclrforming mechanism; feed-mechanism; a presser-foot-; and gage-mechanism for the end 0''? a collarbo-dy and end of a tab, respectively, having gage-membersprojecting across the path oi teed-movement of the collar and having beveled edges presented to the work over which the work is adapted to ride.
2. in a machine for inserting collar-tabs, and in combination, stitch-forming mechanism; a presser-iioot; work-feeding mecha nism; a gage for the end of the collar-body extending partly across the path of feedmovement of the collar-body; and a gage for the end of the tab projecting partly across the path of feedmovement of the tab, the portions of said gages in the path of teed-movement of the work having beveled edges presented to the work.
3. In a machine for inserting collar-tabs,
and in combination, stitch-forming mechanism; work-feeding mechanism; apresserfoot; an undercut gage directly in front of the presser-foot adapted toenterbetween the members of the collar-body and guide the infolded edge of the lower member of said body underlying the inserted portion of the tab; and gagemechanism for the end of a collar-body and end of a tab, respectively, having gage-members projecting across the path of feed-movement of the collar and having beveled edges presented to the work over which the work is adapted to ride.
