Description

UNITED STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. PHELPS, OF WINONA,MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MAP-STAN DS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.` l 08,625, dated October 25,1870; antedated October 13, 1870.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, W. F. PHELPS, of Vinona, in the'county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Map-Stands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, mak ing part of this specification, and to the'letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invent-ion relates to mapstands; and it consists in constructing them with a stand provided with a rigid vertical shaft, and having a hollow shaft arranged to revolve about it, and provided with plates or disks for receiving and holding maps or charts, both for4 ling and preservation, when not in use, as well as to have them convenient for ready reference when desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line x x of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
It is often Very desirable, especially in schools, academies, and other places, to have some suitable and convenient place for maps when not in use, for the purpose of protecting thern from being soiled or injured. Atv the same time it is also very desirable to have them where they can be easily reached for reference. To accomplish this is the object of my invention.
I make a base. A, of wood or other suitable material, and attach rigidly to its center a vertical shaft or standard, B,circu1ar in form, and surrounded at its lower end with a wash. er, a, and then mount the whole on casters b, all as clearly shown in Fig. l. Around the shaft B, I place loosely a hollow shaft, C, openl at its lower end, so that it may be slipped easily upon the shaft B, and having attached at the same end a disk or plate, D, provided openings, g, corresponding in number .with
those in the lower plate, and of the proper size to receive and hold a map when rolled up and standing on the end of the knob of its roller, as clearly shown in both Figs. l and 2. These semicircular openings g, I provide with V-shaped spring-clips f,1nade of brass or other suitable material, and arranged as clearly shdwn in Fig. 2, for the purpose of clasping and holding the map in its place when the stand is being moved or put in motion for or by any cause.
The advantages of a ,map-stand thus rconstructed are apparent, especially for schools and academies, or other places where it is desirable to have a portable rotary map-stand for ling and preserving maps when not in immediate use, as well as for having them convenient for ready reference when desired.
It is obvious that the map-rollers may be labeled in any suitable manner for instantaneous identification.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A portable rotary map-stand consisting of a WVM. F. PHELPS.
