To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BULLOCK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \rVakefield, in the county of-Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Table, of which the'following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a table particularly designed as a dining-table, having a stationary outer section of snflicient width to accommodate the covers for the guests and a revolvingsection upon which the food is to be placed, whereby each guest by turning the revolving center piece or section can gain convenient access to any dish thereon.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide a brake for the center piece adapted to be under the. control of the person carving, thus enabling suchperson to hold said center piece or section stationary while at work, andto so construct the brake that when released by the carver it will automatically disengage therevolving section of the table.
The invention consists in the novel conparts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,forming a part of this specification, in whichsimilar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts inall the figures.
Figurel is a plan view ofthe table, the revolving section having been removed. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through a portion of the complete table. Fig. 3 is a horizontal detail section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a vertical section through the lower portion of one of the legs, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of one of the friction-wheels and a side elevation of a portion of its carrying-arm.
The table consists of a stationary section A and a revoluble section B. The stationary section consists of outer and inner concentric side pieces lOand 11, which support a top section 12. (No model? proved manner to the bottom portions of the side pieces 10 and 11. Legs 14 are employed to support the stationary section, and these legs are placed between the cross-bars 13 at suitable points. The legs are usually provided with upwardly-extending sections 15, carried to the top 12 of the stationary section. One leg let is provided with a bore 16, which extends through it from top to bottom; but at the bottom of the leg an enlargement 17 is made in the bore 16. The said leg is also provided near its bottom portion with a slot 18, as is shown inFig. hwhich meets the enlargement 17 of the bore 16. A recess 19 is produced in the under face of the top 12 of the stationary section adjacent to the leg pro-- vided with the said bore, and in this recess a brake 20 is adapted to slide, which brake is shown inthe form of a plate and extends through an opening at the top of the inner side member of the stationary section A, as is shown in Fig. 3, so that the said brake may extendbeyond the inner side member 11 of the stationary section when desired. This brake 20 is attached to a spring 21, and said spring is secured to the rear end of the recess 19. The tendency of this spring 21 is to draw the brake 2O outward or away from the center space of the stationary section. A rope, cord, or chain'22is secured to the outer end of the slide 20 at the bottom portion thereof, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and this rope, cord, or chain is passed over a pulley 23, which is mounted to turn in a suitable recess in the extension 15 of the aforesaid bored leg of the table. The rope, cord, or chain extends down through the bore 16 of the said leg and at its lower end is attached to a block 24, which has movement in the enlargement 1'Z of the bore 16, and a pin 25 or its equivalent is attached to this block, extending out through the opening 18 in the said leg, so that the carver by placing a foot on the said pin 25 can force the brake 20 inward to an engagement with the revoluble' section B of the table, to be hereinafter particularly described, and thus hold this section stationary while the carving is being done; but the instant the foot of the carver is removed from the pin 25 the spring 21 will act to draw the brake outward and from engage ment with the revolving'section B, which may then be turned as desired. The revolving section B consists of a top member 26, provided at the upper portion of its outer edge preferably with a horizontal rib 27, which extends over the top 12 of the stationary section the desired distance, as is shown in Fig. 2, and an annular supporting beam or bar 28, which is secured to the bottom portion of the top 26. A track 29 is attached in any suitable or approved manner to this supporting beam or bar 28 at its bottom portion. This track 29 is circular and is immediately above a lower track 30, which is secured to the cross-bars 13 of the stationary section, as is best illustrated in Fig. 2.
Atthe center of the revoluble section B of the table a conical block 31 is secured to the under face of the top member 26. This conical block 31 enters a corresponding recess in the upper end of an adjusting-screw 32, which adj usting-screw is located in a socketblock 33, attached to the cross-bars 13 where they join. This socket-block 33 is provided with a bottom annular horizontal flange 34, having a groove in its upper face to receive balls 35, and these balls also travel in a groove at the bottom of a hub 37, which hub is mounted to turn loosely around the socketblock 33. The adjusting-screw is provided in order that the central revoluble portion of the table may be adjusted to inequalities of the floor, and the adjusting-screw is provided with an aperture adapted to receive a pin, so that the set-screw may be readily turned, and after the screw 32 has been adjusted it is held in its adjusted position by anut 38, located on the said screw above the socketblock 33. This nut 38 is also provided with apertures to receive pins, so that the nut may be readily manipulated. Arms 39 are attached to the hub 37, and these arms extend out from the hub and may be of anydesired number. Each arm carries at its outer end a friction-wheel 40, provided with a peripheral rubber or elastic band 41, and the peripheral portions of the wheels 40 engage with the op posing faces of the tracks 29 and 30. These wheels 40 turn upon reduced and threaded outer end portions of the arms 39. Nuts 42 are placed upon the said reduced portions to prevent the wheels from slipping off from the arms, although to this end other means may be substituted for the nuts 42. The revoluble section of the table may be and preferably is provided with depressions in its upper member at suitable distances apart to facilitate the said revolving section being turned upon its axis.
Under such a construction it will be observed that a carver can hold the revoluble section stationary while the carving process is being carried out and that as soon as the foot of the carver is removed from the pin 25 the brake 20 will be released from engagement with the revoluble section of the table and the guests at the table may turn this section at will to bring any dish carried thereby within convenient reach without troubling any otherguest at the table.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A table, comprising a circular stationary outer section having a central 'openingand provided with feet and with bars on its bottom portion, extending across said central opening,a circular track secured upon the said bars at the margin of said opening, a socketblock secured to the cross-bars at the center thereof, an adjustable screw mounted in the block and having a recessed upper end, a hub mounted to turn on the socket-block and provided with radial arms, wheels at the outer ends of the arms, and a circular central revoluble section provided with a conical block at its center fitting in the recess of the screw and with a circular track on its lower face at the margin thereof, as set forth.
'2. A table, comprising a circular stationary outer section having a central opening and provided with feet and with bars extending across the central opening, a circular track secured upon the bars at the margin of the opening, an adjustable support carried by the said bars at the center of the opening, a hub mounted to revolve around the support and provided with radial arms carrying wheels at their outer ends, and a revoluble circular inner section mounted upon the said support, within the opening of the stationary section and provided with a marginal rib at its upper edge extending 'over the stationary section and with a circular track on its lower face at the margin thereof, as set forth.
3. In a table, an outer stationary marginal section provided with legs one of which is provided with a longitudinal borewhose lower end is enlarged, and with a slot leading into said enlarged end of the bore, a revoluble central section, a brake mounted to slide in the stationary section, a spring for holding the brake retracted, a cord orchain secured to the brake and extending down into the bore of the leg, and a block secured to the lower end of the cord, said block being arranged in the enlargement of the bore of the leg and provided with .a pin projecting out through the slot of the leg, as set forth.
4. A table, comprising a circular stationary outer section having a central opening and provided with feet and with bars extending across said opening, a circular track secured upon the bars at the margin of the opening, an adjustable support carried by the said bars at the center of the opening, a hub mounted to revolve around the support and provided with radial arms carrying wheels at their outer ends, a revoluble central circular section mounted in the opening upon the-support and provided with a circular track on its lower face at the margin thereof, and a sliding brake mounted in the stationary section and adapted-to engage the periphery of the revoluble section, as set forth.
5. A table, comprising a circular stationary outer section having a central opening and provided with feet and with bars crossing the central opening, a circular track carried by the cross-bars at the margin of the opening, an adjustable bearing carried by the said bars at the center of the opening, and having a socket in its end, a hub mounted to revolve around the bearing and provided with radial arms carrying Wheels at their ends, a revoluble central section provided with a conical block at its center fitting in the socket of the bearing and provided with a bar on its under face at the margin, and a circular tracksecured tosaid bar, as set forth.
6. In a table the combination with a stationary outer section having a central open ing and provided with an annular track at the margin of the opening, and a revoluble central section provided with 'an annular track on its under marginal surface, and with a conical block at its center, of a socket-block at the center of the stationary section, a screw screwing into said block and having a conical socket in its end receiving the conical block of the revoluble section, a hub mounted to revolve on the socket-block, and provided with radial arms, and wheels mountedon the outer ends of the said arms and traveling on the tracks, as set forth.
7. In a table, the combination with a stationary marginal section having a recess in 7 its under face, and a revoluble central section mounted in the space inclosed by the outer section, of a sliding brake mounted in the recess of the stationary section and adapted to engage the periphery of the revoluble section, a spring for holding the brake out of engagement with the revoluble section, and a cord having one end secured to the brake and its other end provided with means to be engaged by the foot of the occupant of the table to operate the brake, as set forth.
