LOUIE F. ALSWORTH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR TRUING- WHEELS.
Application led December 30, 1916.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUm F. ALswonTi-r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Truing IVheels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for truing rims of wheels and consists of a simple and ecient device of this nature, having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view showing the application of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through a wheel and device for holding the truing member, parts of the latter being shown in elevation.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letters, A and A designate conical-shaped bearing members which are adapted to engage the opposite ends of the holes of the hub of a wheel. B designates a shaft which is adapted to be supported upon any suitable rack or other device, and C is a collar having a set screw D mounted in a threaded. aperture therein and designed to engage and hold the collar in different. positions upon the shaft B. A coiled spring E is mounted upon the shaft and interposed upon the conical-shaped member A and the collar C.
A sleeve F is held in different adjusted positions upon the shaft through the medium of a set screw F", said sleeve being adapted Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1917.
Serial No. 139,780.
to engage the conical-shaped member A to hold the same in the hub of the wheel and is provided with a cutaway portion F2 in which a plate H is fastened, said plate being provided with a recess I in which the bar K has an adjustment. A strip Q spans the recess in said plate and is held thereon by means of nuts C mounted upon screws O passing through the plate and said strip. A gage plate R is provided with a longitudinal slot R and a screw T passes through the bar K and also through said slot, while a winged nut T is mounted upon the screw T and serves as a means for holding the gage member R in different adjusted positions. It will be noted upon reference to the drawings that one end of the slotted bar is widened as at R2 and which part is adapted to engage the rim of the wheel.
In applying my device, the conical-shaped members are adjusted to the hub of a wheel in the manner shown, the wheel first being placed down horizontally with the outer portion upward. The bar K is then adjusted so that the slotted gage member will be at right angles to the face of the wheel with the portion R2 at the end thereof adjacent to the outer marginal edge of the rim or felly. The bar K may then be rotated upon the shaft and the slotted bar moving about the circumference of the felly will indicate any irregularity therein and which may be righted. Owing to the peculiar construction of the device, the same may be adjusted for use upon wheels of different diameters.
What I claim to be new is 1. A device for truing wheels comprising a supporting shaft, conical-shaped members mounted thereon and adapted to engage the hole in the hub of a wheel, a sleeve upon said shaft, means for fastening the sleeve to said shaft, said sleeve having a recess therein, a. bar movable in said recess, means for holding the bar in adjusted positions, a slotted gage secured to said bar, a screw passing through said bar and slotted gage, and a thumb nut upon the screw.
2. A device for truing wheels comprising two conical-shaped members adapted to engage the hole in the hub of a Wheel, a shaft upon which said conical-shaped members are mounted, a collar fixed to said shaft and a spring interposed between the collar and one of said conical-shaped members, a sleeve upon the shaft, a set screw for holding thel same to the shaft, an adjustable bar mounted LOUIE F. ALSWORTH. Witnesses R. L. DORCH, C. E. CARRIER.
