Be it vknown that I, JOHN R. BECKETT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Somerville, county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Truing Grinding Disks, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of the several views.
The invention relates to devices for truing grinding disks ort/like rotary tools with operative peripheries either V-shaped in cross section or with more or less of flattened peripheral surfaces between the beveled peripheral edges. A principal object of the invention is to provide a truing device that may be quickly and easily adjusted and set for gauging and truing the beveled edge lat either sideof` the tool or a flattened intermediate peripheral portion with the use of a single diamond point or like truing element. A further .object is to provide a self-contained unitary attachment adapted to be detachably applied to a grinding head for truing up the grinding disk as required. The foregoingand other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description, and the distinctive features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.

In accordance with my invention the bracket frame 10 is equipped underneath the grinding disk with an undercut way 14 in which is slidably fitted a tongue 15 projecting from a head 16, this tongue being adapted to be clamped in adjusted position by `any suitabley means shown as a screw 17 enga 'ng a follower or gib 184 at one side of said undercut way.`
Mounted to turn in the head 16 is a vertical hollow post 19 having fixed at its lower end underneath the head 16 4aplate segment 20 by means of a key 20a. formed with an arcuate undercut s ot 21 in which are adjustably fitted headed bolts 22, 23 adapted to be clamped thereto in any adjusted position and each bearing a transversel extending adjustable threaded pin 24. post 19 has its top laterally extended to constitute a slide way 26 with undercut sides and with which 'is slidably engaged a carriage 27. This carriage has 'fixed underneath the same at one side thereof a rack bar 28 which is engaged by a pinion 29 fixed at the to of a shaft 30 which is vertically journa ed in the hollow post 19 and is equipped` with a stem 30l projecting downwardly below the post 19 with an operatingl head 31 at the extremity thereof which may be knurled to constitute a better finger hold. The carriage 27 has fittedl to move transversely on the top surface thereof a slide rest 32 in which 1s threaded an operatin stem 33 having at its inner portion a swiv engagement 34 with the carriage 27 to hold the same from endwise movement. This stem has a knurled head 35 for actuation thereof. The slide rest 32 has fitted inacated at 37. With the described mounting with the axis of the of the truing tool l37 it will be noted that said tool may be adjusted angularly by operating the segment plate v and with the locating pins 24m-operative with the stop pin 25, 'so that said tool as moved by the actuation of the carriage 27 alon the slide way 26, will engage and true eac side '12", 12b of a V-edged grinding disk, these two adjusted positions of the truing tool being indicated at 370,371 respectively. Likewise the tool may bef-set so as to traverse across a flattened peripheral edge 1'2c of a grinding disk which may embody such an outline, as is required for certain uses, the position of the tool in this case being indicated at 372 and the slide Way 26 being then set parallel grinding disk. Thus the slide way 26 may e quickly andeasily located and alined forl truing movement of the 'tool in any required direction, -and the tool may then be -moved to traverse it over the dierent portions .of the surface to be trued by operating the knurled head 31.' The required setting of the tool transversely inward to bring it into proper operative contact with the surface to be trued may be readily effected in anyfadjusted position of the tool mounting by actuating the knurled head 35. am thus enabled to utilize a single diamond pointed or like truing tool forftruing up grinding disks of any form or outline that may be encountered and the necessary settin for any particular grinding disk can be quickly and easily effected. The bracket frame 10 with its base 10L bearing the grinding disk and adapted to receive the truing device as described, is preferably clamped to a suitable slide or carriage mounting so as to be angularly adjustable about an axis line mas indicated in Fig. 2, this axis being the axial center'of the threaded socket 10",

I am aware that the invention may be ,embodied in other 'specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the lforegoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a grinding disk, of a truing device therefor comprising a carriage support mounted for angular adjustment to extend diagonally at either side of said disk at will, a carriage bearing a truing tool mounted lfor movement on said support and equipped with an actuating device coaxial with the axis of ad'ustment of said support, and means for a justing the tool transversely on said carriage.
2. A truing device for grinding disks,
comprising a bracket mounting adapted to 'be detacliably applied to a grinding tool post e uipped witharack and pinion actuating evice havin an operating stem ex. tending through said post, and a truing tool mounted on said carriage for adjustment in a direction transverse of the carriage movement.
4. rI'lie combination with a frame having a grinding disk journaled therein, of 4means for truing such disk comprising a bracket detachably and adjustably applied to such frame, a post mounted to turn in said bracket with provision for predetermined angular adjustment, a carriage mounted to slide on the top of saidy post with a rack and 'pinion actuating device having van operating stem extending through said post, and
atool holder mounted for adjustment on said carriage in a direction transverse of the carriage movement.
