DEVICE FOR TRUING WHEELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,153, dated March 14, 1899.
Application filed April 27, 1898.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN GEORGE SCHMIDT, of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Device for Truing Wheels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, and economic device especially adapted for truing bicycle-wheels, the device being so constructed and of such size that it may be readily carried in a tool-bag and when required for use may be clamped upon the forks of the bicycle-frame without danger of marring the enamel and be applied to the wheel while mounted .in the frame.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, showing it as applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device, drawn on a larger scale than in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4 isa section through the line 44 of Fig. 2.
The body of the device consists of a plate 10, having a horizontal flange 11 formed at one of its ends, the flange being at a right angle to the body, the opposite end of the plate being laterally curved somewhat over the outer face of the body-plate to form a jaw 12, the inner face of which jaw is pro vided with a cushion 13 of any approved material. An adjustable jaw 14 is mounted to face the fixed jaw 12, the adjustable jaw 14 being oppositely curved to the jaw 12, whereby their concaved surfaces face, and the concaved face of the adjustable jaw is provided with a cushion 15. The adjustable jaw 14 is mounted upon an angle-plate 16, one member whereof is provided with an opening, through which the smooth portion of an adj usting-screw 17 is passed, the screw being held to turn loosely in or adjacent to the jaw 14. A set-screw 18 is passed through the member of the angle-plate in which the adjusting-screw is mounted and into an annu- Serial No.6 '7 8, 9'79. (No'modeh) lar groove produced upon the said adjusting screw, as shown in Fig. 3. The other inember of the angle-plate 16, carrying the jaw 14, is provided with a threaded stud 19, which extends outward through a longitudinal slot 20, made in the body-plate of the device, as shown in Fig. 2, the said threaded post being provided with a washer 21 and with a locknut 22, and the screw 17, at its outer end, is provided with a suitable head 23. Two lugs 24 and 25 are secured upon the convexed surface of the jaw 12, a space being made to intervene the two lugs, as shown in Fig. 1. A screw 26 is passed through correspondinglythreaded apertures in the lugs 24 and 25, and the innerend of the said screw is adapted to engage with the side of the tire of the wheel to be trued in order to adjust the lateral deflection of the said wheel. An adjusting-bar 27 extends along the upper edge of the bodyplate 10 of the device, the adj usting-bar 27 being provided with a downwardly and outwardly extending arm 28, the said arm being so curved that an offset 29 thereon will enter the space between the lugs 24 and 25, the truing-screw 26 passing loosely through the offset.
A truing-pin 30 is provided in connection with the adjusting-bar 27. This truing-pin is provided with a plain inner surface adapted for engagement with the periphery of the rim of the wheel and a threaded surface connecting with the plain surface, and said threaded surface is carried through a'suitably-threaded aperture in the extremity of the curved arm 28. Normally the adj Listing-bar will rest upon the body-plate of the device and the truingpin 30 will be at a lower plane than the truing-screw 26. The truing-pin 30 has its plain surface polished and is adapted to take eccentric deflection off the wheel. To that end the truing-pin is vertically adjustable, the adjustment being accomplished by the vertical movement of the adjusting-bar 27, which when carried upward will cause the pin 30 to be carried downward, as shown by the arrows in Fig. 2.
The adjustment of the bar 27 is preferably accomplished by attaching a strap 31 to the bar, which extends down along the back of the body-plate, terminating in a segmental exteriorly-threaded section 32, upon which a nut 33 is mounted, the nut being held to turn in a slot 34, made in the body-plate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Awheel-truing device, co1nprisingabodyplate, a fixed jaw thereon, a jaw adjustable on the body-plate, an adj listing-bar mounted to swing relatively to the body-plate, a curved screw-rod on the bar, a nut engaging the screwrod and located in an opening in the bodyplate, a truing-pin adjustable through an extension of the adj usting-bar and a swingscrew adjacent to the fixed jaw of the bodyplate, substantially as specified.
2. A truing device for vehicle-wheels, consisting of a body-plate provided with a fixed and an adjustable jaw, a truing-screw located adjacent to the fixed jaw, an adjusting-bar having an extension fulcrumed upon the truing-screw, a truing-pin having a threaded surface engaging with the extension of the adjusting-bar, and means for controlling the movement of the adj usting-bar, for the purpose set forth.
